Description

Massolino Vigna Rionda Riserva Black Label 2016 in Jeroboam format is a benchmark Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered crus, presented here in an impressive 5L bottle for truly special occasions. The 2016 vintage is widely hailed as extraordinary in Barolo, combining purity, finesse and structure in a way that promises decades of evolution. This Riserva, produced only in top years from the historic Vigna Rionda vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, showcases the full depth and complexity Nebbiolo can achieve in great terroir and a great year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep yet luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections toward the rim, a classic Barolo hue that will gradually develop more tawny notes with age. The nose is refined and layered, opening slowly with rose petals, dried violets and red cherries, followed by darker notes of blackcurrant, blood orange peel, liquorice, sweet tobacco and subtle hints of truffle, cedar and spice. On the palate, the 2016 Vigna Rionda Riserva is both powerful and poised, with silky yet firm tannins that are beautifully integrated into a core of concentrated red and black fruit. Flavors of ripe cherry, plum and raspberry mingle with notes of leather, tar, balsamic herbs and mineral smoke, carried by precise acidity that keeps the wine fresh and focused. The finish is long, savory and persistent, with an almost saline minerality and fine-grained tannic grip. From Jeroboam, the aging curve is extended; this wine will easily develop for 25–40 years or more, gaining even greater complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The grapes for this Barolo come from the famed Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most prized sites in the entire Barolo zone. The vineyard lies on calcareous marl soils rich in limestone and clay, at around 330–360 meters above sea level, with excellent exposure that ensures slow, even ripening. In the outstanding 2016 growing season, characterized by ideal water balance, moderate temperatures and a long vegetative cycle, the Nebbiolo was harvested by hand at optimal phenolic ripeness. In keeping with Massolino’s traditional approach, the wine is vinified with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complex aromatics, followed by a long maturation in large Slavonian oak casks before a further extended period of bottle aging as Riserva. The Jeroboam format enhances aging potential, allowing the wine to evolve more slowly and harmoniously.

Food & Serving
This is a majestic, structured Barolo meant for the table and for long, unhurried meals. It pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, roasted venison, and dishes featuring white truffle from Alba. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged pecorino also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); given the wine’s youth and concentration in this large format, a generous decant of 2–4 hours is highly recommended to allow the aromas and texture to fully unfurl.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the historic, reference-point producers of traditional Barolo. Still family-owned and operated, the estate has built its reputation on expressing the character of top Serralunga crus—most notably Vigna Rionda—through meticulous vineyard work and classic, long-aging winemaking. Massolino’s Barolos are celebrated for their depth, longevity and authenticity, and the Vigna Rionda Riserva Black Label represents the pinnacle of the estate’s production, released only in the finest vintages and consistently ranked among the most important wines of the region.
