Description
Massolino Dolcetto d’Alba 2019 is a vibrant, fruit-driven red from one of Piedmont’s most respected Barolo producers. Here, the family turns its careful, traditional approach toward Dolcetto, crafting a wine that’s both authentically local and effortlessly enjoyable. This bottling showcases the classic, informal charm of Dolcetto, while reflecting Massolino’s century-long commitment to quality in Serralunga d’Alba and beyond.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Dolcetto d’Alba shows a bright, deep ruby-purple hue, hinting at its youthful energy and juicy fruit core. The nose is immediately inviting, with pure notes of wild forest berries, redcurrants and blackberries layered over subtle hints of rosemary, violet and a delicate crushed-stone minerality.
On the palate, this Dolcetto is fresh, medium-bodied and wonderfully drinkable, with lively red and black berry flavors framed by gentle tannins and a clean, dry finish. The subtle herbal note carries through, adding lift and complexity without overshadowing the wine’s primary fruit. This is a wine intended to be enjoyed in its youth for maximum vibrancy and charm, but it will comfortably develop and gain a touch of softness over the next 3–4 years.
Production
Sourced from estate vineyards in the rolling hills of Piedmont around Alba, Massolino’s Dolcetto d’Alba benefits from well-drained calcareous and clay-limestone soils that enhance freshness and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest clusters, preserving Dolcetto’s delicate aromatics and natural acidity. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to extract vivid color and pure fruit while avoiding harsh tannins, followed by maturation in stainless steel or neutral vessels to maintain the wine’s crisp, unadorned character without influence from new oak.
Food & Serving
This Dolcetto is made for the table, pairing beautifully with antipasto misto, cured meats, salumi, and a range of local cheeses such as Taleggio or young Fontina. It also works well with simple pasta dishes, pizza, roast chicken, grilled vegetables and rustic, tomato-based recipes. Serve at about 15–17°C (59–63°F) for optimal freshness and balance. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the aromas open up if the wine is served soon after opening.
Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is a historic family estate and a benchmark producer in Barolo, renowned for its steadfast dedication to traditional winemaking and the expression of classic Piedmontese varieties.
