Description
Massolino Barolo Parussi 2020 in this impressive 5 L format showcases a different side of one of Barolo’s most respected producers. Sourced from the renowned Parussi cru in Castiglione Falletto, it combines precision, brightness and tension in a wine built for decades of evolution. As Massolino’s only Barolo from outside Serralunga d’Alba, it stands out for its razor-sharp focus and radiant, finely polished profile.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Parussi is luminous and vibrant, with a brilliant garnet hue typical of top Nebbiolo. The nose is finely etched and detailed, offering red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange peel wrapped in notes of rose petal, violet, licorice, and a subtle hint of balsamic and spice. There’s a sense of precision to the aromatics—nothing feels heavy, everything is clear and finely tuned.
On the palate, the wine is direct, taut and beautifully focused, with that “knife‑edge” character described by critics: lively acidity, firm yet ultra-fine tannins and an almost chiselled structure. Flavors of red berries, pomegranate, sour cherry and cranberry are layered with dried roses, anise, sweet tobacco and a saline, chalky undertone from the sandy limestone soils. The finish is long, linear and elegant, promising impressive development. In a 5 L large format, the aging potential is outstanding—expect it to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years or more, gaining complexity while preserving its bright, refined core.
Production
Parussi is a single vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, with sandy limestone soils that tend to produce Barolo of aromatic lift, elegance and fine tannin. While Massolino is historically rooted in Serralunga d’Alba, this is their sole Barolo from this commune, offering a fascinating contrast in terroir. Nebbiolo grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and tension, then vinified in a classic Barolo style: fermentation and maceration on the skins to extract aroma, color and structure, followed by aging in large oak casks to shape the wine without overpowering it. The result is a Barolo that is both firmly structured and exquisitely refined, with a limited production of around 8,300 bottles—making this 5 L format particularly rare.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an excellent partner for refined, savory dishes: think braised veal shank, lamb shanks, osso buco, truffled risotto, tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Game birds, roasted duck or guinea fowl with herbs also highlight its aromatic complexity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its structure and youth, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for immediate enjoyment, and even longer for special occasions, especially from a 5 L bottle, which tends to open up more slowly but beautifully over the course of an evening.
Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the historic, benchmark estates of Serralunga d’Alba, widely admired for its traditional yet precise interpretations of Barolo. Over generations, the family has built up an impressive collection of top sites, becoming a reference point for expressing the depth and structure of Serralunga terroir. The Parussi bottling is unique within their range as the only Barolo sourced from Castiglione Falletto, underscoring Massolino’s commitment to showcasing the nuances of individual crus. Consistently praised by international critics and collectors alike, the estate is considered among the elite producers of Barolo, known for wines that combine authenticity, age-worthiness and a refined sense of place.
