Description

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2019 is a powerful, single-vineyard Barolo that captures the muscular elegance of Nebbiolo from one of Castiglione Falletto’s most northerly crus. Produced in limited quantities (around 9,000 bottles), it is crafted for enthusiasts who appreciate structure, depth and the patience to let a great Barolo unfold over time. Sourced from the renowned Parussi vineyard, this wine bridges traditional Barolo character with precise, modern winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Barolo Parussi shows a deep garnet core with the classic Nebbiolo transparency at the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens with dark cherry, black plum and macerated raspberry, layered with notes of licorice, rose petal, dried violet and tobacco. Subtle undertones of anise, leather, sweet baking spices and a whiff of tar and underbrush add complexity as it breathes. On the palate, this is firm, compact and tightly wound in its youth, showing the muscular side of Parussi. Dark red and black fruits are framed by savoury spice, crushed herbs and a mineral edge that speaks of its hillside origins. The tannins are abundant, fine-grained and quite structured, giving the wine a serious, architectural shape that clearly calls for more time in bottle. The acidity is vibrant and well-integrated, lending lift to the dense core of fruit. This 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will reward cellaring for at least 8–10 years from vintage and should continue to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years in good conditions.

Production
Parussi is a cru in the commune of Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont’s Barolo zone, known for its calcareous marl and sandy soils that yield Nebbiolo with both power and aromatic lift. The vineyard’s northerly position moderates ripeness, preserving acidity and fragrance while still achieving excellent phenolic maturity in a vintage like 2019. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with low yields to concentrate flavor and structure. In keeping with Massolino’s classical philosophy, fermentation and maceration are conducted in temperature-controlled tanks to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity without harshness, followed by extended aging in large oak casks (botti) and bottle before release. The result is a Barolo that is firmly rooted in tradition yet beautifully precise in its expression of site and vintage.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is best suited to richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its structure. Think braised beef or veal, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, or classic Piemontese fare such as brasato al Barolo and tajarin with white truffle. Mature cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino, or an earthy toma also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully open. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s dark fruit and spice complexity; with more bottle age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is usually sufficient.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the benchmark traditional producers of Barolo and a key reference point for the region. Still family-owned and operated, the estate has gradually expanded its holdings in some of the Langhe’s most coveted crus, including Parussi, Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Massolino is known for its classic approach: long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak casks and an unwavering focus on expressing the nuances of each individual vineyard. Over the decades, the winery has earned a strong international reputation for producing Barolo of depth, authenticity and excellent aging capacity, consistently standing among the most respected names in Piedmont.
