Description
Massolino Barolo Parafada 2021 is a distinctive single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba, showing a more floral and herbal expression of the commune’s powerful style. Known for its tension, structure, and mineral edge, it captures the character of one of Barolo’s most compelling MGA sites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet hue with the brightness and transparency expected of a classic Barolo. The nose is highly aromatic and layered, with flowers, dried herbs, crushed oregano, wild cherry, blackcurrant, plum, and a distinctive iron-like note that adds complexity and a sense of place.
On the palate, Parafada is structured and tightly wound, with firm tannins, vivid acidity, and impressive energy. The fruit is precise rather than lush, framed by savory, botanical nuances and a long, mineral-driven finish. It has excellent aging potential and should gain finesse and depth with time in bottle.
Production
Parafada is a cru site in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most renowned communes, where limestone and clay soils help produce wines with intensity, structure, and age-worthy tannins. The vineyard’s elevated, well-exposed slopes contribute to the wine’s aromatic lift and precise profile. Harvesting and vinification are carried out with the aim of preserving freshness, clarity, and site expression.
Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs beautifully with rich Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef, truffle risotto, game, and slow-cooked lamb, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up and soften its structure.
Producer
Massolino is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most respected family producers, long associated with traditional, terroir-driven Barolo. Founded in 1896, the estate has built a strong reputation for expressing the power and precision of the commune’s best sites, with a particular focus on vineyard character and classic winemaking. Their Barolos are widely regarded for their consistency, elegance, and aging potential.
