Description

Massolino Barolo Parafada 2017 in this rare 5 L format showcases one of Serralunga d’Alba’s great crus in a beautifully approachable vintage. Traditionally the most muscular and brooding wine in the Massolino range, Parafada in 2017 reveals a slightly plusher, more seductive side without losing its classic Barolo structure. This is a collector’s bottle built for the long haul, yet already offering striking purity of fruit and charm.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Parafada is a deep, vibrant garnet with the classic brick-tinged rim that hints at Nebbiolo’s noble evolution. The nose opens with Morello cherry and dried blackberry, followed by notes of rose petal, tarry spice, licorice and a distinct iron-like, rusty mineral edge. Subtle tones of sweet hazelnut paste, tobacco and dried herbs add further complexity as the wine unfolds in the glass. On the palate, this Barolo is powerful yet unexpectedly generous for Parafada, with a rich core of red and dark fruit wrapped in firm, polished tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, blood orange, black tea and dried plum mingle with hints of leather, anise and warm earth. The 2017 shows excellent concentration and intensity, but the vintage’s slightly sweeter, softer profile makes it remarkably accessible in its youth. The structure and acidity, especially from this large-format 5 L bottle, promise a long aging trajectory – comfortably 15–25 years from vintage, with magnum-like development that will reward patience.

Production
Parafada is a prestigious south- to south-west–facing cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its steep slopes, calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo its hallmark power and depth. Massolino farms these vineyards with meticulous attention, favoring low yields and careful bunch selection at harvest to capture optimal ripeness and balance, particularly in a warm vintage like 2017. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, then traditionally vinified: a fermentation and maceration on the skins over several days to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This classic, unhurried approach allows the character of Parafada and Serralunga’s mineral-rich terroir to shine through.

Food & Serving
This is a true food wine, ideally paired with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, game birds, truffle pasta, wild mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. In this 5 L format, the wine benefits from substantial aeration; decant for 2–3 hours in youth, and at least 1–2 hours even as it matures, to allow the tannins to soften and the layered bouquet to fully emerge.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Barolo’s benchmark estates, renowned for its steadfast commitment to traditional winemaking and meticulous vineyard work. Over generations, the family has assembled prime holdings in some of the region’s most esteemed crus, including Parafada, Margheria and Vigna Rionda, helping to define Serralunga’s reputation for powerful, age-worthy Barolo. Massolino’s wines are regularly praised by leading critics and collectors alike for their balance of structure, finesse and terroir expression, making the estate a reference point for classic, cellar-worthy Barolo from Piedmont.
