Description

Massolino Barolo Margheria 2020 in this impressive 3L double magnum format is a classic, terroir-driven expression of Serralunga d’Alba. Sourced from the revered Margheria cru, it captures the village’s hallmark combination of dark fruit, mineral tension and floral elegance. This is Barolo crafted for both serious collectors and Nebbiolo lovers who value finesse over sheer power, and the large-format bottle promises a particularly graceful evolution over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Margheria shows a deep, luminous garnet hue with brick-red highlights at the rim, already hinting at Nebbiolo’s noble transparency. The nose is refined yet intense, opening with dark cherry and wild berry layered over blood orange zest, violet and blue flowers. Distinctive notes of iron-rich earth, crushed stone and a subtle, savory spice add complexity and a clear sense of place. On the palate, the wine is precise and elegant rather than heavy, reflecting the best side of this warm vintage. Expect sweet red and black cherry, raspberry and plum framed by tangy citrus, hints of licorice, dried rose and a faint herbal edge. The tannins are firm, fine-grained and classically Serralunga—structured but not austere—supported by vibrant acidity that stretches the finish long and mouthwatering. There’s already a graceful sweetness of fruit on the close, but this 2020 still feels coiled and will gain depth, nuance and harmony with further cellaring, especially in this 3L format. Properly stored, it should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or more.

Production
Margheria is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most esteemed crus, characterized by calcareous, iron-rich marl soils and a south to southwest exposure that gives Nebbiolo both ripeness and striking mineral backbone. Massolino farms these vineyards with a strong respect for the land, favoring careful, manual work in the rows and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. In classic Barolo fashion, the grapes are traditionally vinified, with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by long aging in large, neutral oak casks. This approach allows the distinctive Serralunga character—dark fruit, earthy minerality, and floral lift—to shine clearly through, particularly in a single-cru bottling like Margheria.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Think braised beef or veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. In this 3L format, decanting is strongly recommended: allow at least 2–3 hours in a wide-based decanter for younger bottles to soften the tannins and fully release the wine’s layered bouquet.
