Description
Massolino Barolo Margheria 2017 in magnum (1.5 L) showcases one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most characterful crus in a generous, cellar-worthy format. This is a firmly structured, classically styled Barolo that balances depth of fruit with the distinctive, savory minerality that has made Margheria so coveted among Nebbiolo lovers. The 2017 vintage brings a slightly warmer, riper profile, yet the wine remains finely etched and quietly complex, rewarding patience and attentive drinkers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Margheria is a luminous, deep garnet with brick-red nuances at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The nose opens slowly and somewhat restrained at first, then gradually unfurls with time in the glass: red and purple berries (raspberry, cherry, wild plum), hints of violet and rose, followed by notes of sage, mint, and lavender. Underneath the fruit lies a clear mineral core—iron, crushed limestone, and a touch of white pepper and subtle spice that speak of the vineyard’s calcareous soils.
On the palate, this is a precise, firmly built Barolo with a linear, almost “transparent” feel that lets each nuance show through. The attack is medium to full-bodied with concentrated red fruits and tangy cherry, quickly framed by taut, fine-grained tannins. Herbal tones of grilled and dried Mediterranean herbs weave through the mid-palate, alongside savory undertones and a saline edge. The finish is long, dry, and persistent, carried by fresh acidity and a chalky, mouthcoating structure that promises a long life ahead. In magnum, the aging potential is especially strong—expect this wine to develop beautifully over 15–20 years from vintage, with optimal drinking likely from 2025–2040 and beyond for those who enjoy fully evolved Barolo.
Production
Margheria is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s great crus, a hillside vineyard with predominantly limestone and marl soils that give Barolo its hallmark structure, minerality, and longevity. Situated at moderate to high elevation with excellent exposure, the site benefits from warm days and cool nights, allowing Nebbiolo to ripen fully while retaining vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. Massolino harvests the Nebbiolo grapes by hand, carefully sorting bunches to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with an extended maceration on the skins, extracting color, tannin, and aromatic compounds in a controlled, traditional manner. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), a classic Barolo approach that emphasizes purity of fruit and terroir expression rather than overt new oak influence, before a further period of bottle aging to harmonize its elements. The magnum format slows the evolution and preserves freshness, making it particularly suited to long-term cellaring.
Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for dishes with depth, richness, and umami to complement its structure and complexity. It pairs beautifully with braised meats (osso buco, brasato al Barolo, slow-cooked beef or lamb), game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and mushroom-based recipes such as porcini risotto or tagliatelle with wild mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino, or well-aged Alpine cheeses are also excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. Given the wine’s youth and inherent firmness, especially in magnum, decanting is strongly recommended: 2–3 hours before serving for current drinking, or a shorter 1–1.5 hour decant if opened after extended cellaring.
Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Barolo’s benchmark, family-owned estates and a reference point for traditionally crafted Nebbiolo. Over multiple generations, the Massolino family has expanded its holdings to include some of the most prestigious crus in the appellation—Margheria, Parafada, and Vigna Rionda—while remaining deeply rooted in classical Langhe winemaking. Their approach favors meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and patient aging in large casks to let each site’s character emerge with clarity and authenticity. Massolino’s Barolo Margheria is widely regarded as one of the purest expressions of this Serralunga cru, consistently praised by international critics and collectors for its balance of power, elegance, and terroir-driven identity.
