Description
Massolino Barolo Margheria 2017 in Jeroboam (4.5 L) is a powerful, classically structured Barolo from one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most coveted crus. This large-format bottling offers the same finesse and personality as the standard bottling, but with an even slower, more graceful evolution in the cellar. Savory herbs, iron, spice and red-purple fruits come together in a wine that is both authentic to Margheria and built for long-term enjoyment.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo Margheria shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged reflections toward the rim, typical of Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The nose opens slowly and is initially restrained, then unfurls with time to reveal layers of sage, mint, lavender, and grilled herbs, joined by red and purple berry fruits, crushed violets, chalky minerality and a subtle touch of white pepper and spice.
On the palate, this is a firm, tightly knit Barolo with a classic, linear structure. Ripe red cherry, cranberry, wild strawberry and plum are woven with notes of iron, licorice, dried flowers and a distinctly stony, limestone-tinged backbone. The tannins are fine yet assertive, giving the wine a sense of tension and energy, while the acidity keeps everything lifted and precise. 2017 shows a quieter, more introspective personality compared to the exuberant 2016, but with time in the glass its depth and complexity emerge beautifully. In Jeroboam, this wine will age especially well: expect a drinking window easily stretching 15–25 years from vintage, with the large format further extending its freshness and aromatic nuance.
Production
Margheria is a historic single vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized communes, known for its compact limestone and clay soils that yield Nebbiolo of great structure and minerality. The vines sit at altitude on well‑drained slopes, benefiting from excellent sun exposure and the diurnal shifts that preserve aromatic complexity. Massolino harvests the Nebbiolo grapes by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, picking parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a traditional fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic detail, followed by aging in large, neutral oak casks. This classic, non-interventionist approach allows the Margheria terroir—its iron-tinged earth, floral tones and chalky backbone—to speak clearly in the finished wine.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure: braised beef or veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with meat ragù, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both aromatics and texture. Given its youthful firmness, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking, and even longer for those who enjoy more open, expressive aromatics. The Jeroboam format also makes it ideal for large gatherings, where the wine can evolve gradually over the course of an evening.
Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the benchmark producers of Serralunga d’Alba and a reference point for traditional Barolo. Still family‑owned and run, the estate has built its reputation on expressing individual crus—such as Margheria—with clarity and authenticity. Over the decades, Massolino has helped define the classic Serralunga style: structured, ageworthy Barolo with a strong sense of place. Their wines regularly receive top critical acclaim and are widely regarded as some of the most consistent and terroir‑driven in the Barolo region.
