Description

Massolino Barolo Margheria 2017 in this impressive 3L double magnum format is a terroir-driven Barolo with depth, poise and a quietly powerful personality. Sourced from the historic Margheria cru in Serralunga d’Alba, it marries classic structure with refined, mineral-driven elegance. This large-format bottling is ideal for collectors and special occasions, allowing the wine to evolve slowly and gracefully over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo Margheria shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of high-quality Nebbiolo. The nose is initially restrained and takes time to unfurl, but patience is rewarded with layers of red and purple berries, sage, mint, lavender and grilled herbs, framed by notes of iron, crushed limestone and a delicate hint of white pepper and spice. On the palate, this is a firm, classically built Barolo with a transparent, almost chiselled feel. Fine yet authoritative tannins wrap around a core of sour cherry, wild berries and pomegranate, underlined by savory tones of dried herbs, tea leaf and earth. The finish is long, dry and mineral, with a distinct sense of purity and energy. While already compelling, the 2017 Margheria clearly benefits from time: in 3L format its aging potential extends comfortably 15–25 years from vintage, developing greater complexity, truffle nuances and silky texture with cellaring.

Production
Margheria is one of the most prized crus of Serralunga d’Alba, known for its calcareous, limestone-rich soils and ideal south/southwest exposures that give Nebbiolo its trademark structure and minerality. Massolino farms these vineyards traditionally, with careful green harvest and manual picking to ensure optimal ripeness and selection of the best clusters. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and undergo a long maceration to extract aromatic complexity and fine tannins, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is then aged in large traditional oak casks, allowing slow, harmonious evolution without masking the vineyard character, before extended bottle rest to refine its structure and bouquet.

Food & Serving
This Barolo shines alongside rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, game birds, truffle risotto, porcini mushrooms and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration—especially in double magnum—decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to help the aromas open and the tannins begin to soften, revealing the full elegance and complexity of Margheria.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Barolo’s benchmark traditional producers, renowned for expressing the unique personalities of individual crus such as Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Over four generations, the family has remained deeply rooted in the village and its vineyards, helping to define the classic, ageworthy style of Serralunga Barolo. Their unwavering focus on terroir, meticulous vineyard work and patient aging in large casks has earned Massolino a reputation among critics and collectors as one of the most reliable and respected names in Piedmont.
