Description
Massolino Barolo 2019 is a classic expression of Piedmontese elegance: refined, linear and beautifully composed from first sip to finish. Crafted entirely from Nebbiolo and aged in large Slavonian oak for 30 months, it captures Barolo’s hallmark combination of aromatic lift and tightly woven structure. This cuvée, bearing Massolino’s discreet cream-colored label, has become a benchmark for traditional Barolo and a reference point for the Serralunga style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Massolino Barolo shows a translucent garnet hue with bright ruby reflections at the rim, signalling both youth and purity. The nose is precise and focused, offering layered aromas of wild cherries, pomegranate and redcurrant, intertwined with notes of violet, rose petal and blue flowers. Beneath the fruit and florals lie more savory nuances: crushed stones, dried herbs, subtle tea leaf and a gentle whisper of spice from the large oak casks.
On the palate, the wine is poised and linear, with a medium to full body carried by vibrant acidity and finely etched tannins. Red cherry, cranberry and blood orange meet hints of licorice, tar and mineral, building in complexity with air. The tannins are firm but polished, promising excellent development without ever feeling harsh. This 2019 has notable aging potential: it is already captivating in its youth with a quick decant, but will gain depth, silkiness and tertiary notes—truffle, leather, dried flowers—over the next 10–15 years and likely beyond in good cellaring conditions.
Production
The fruit for Massolino Barolo 2019 comes from estate vineyards in the heart of Barolo, primarily around Serralunga d’Alba, an area famed for its limestone- and clay-rich marls that give wines both structure and minerality. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, helps Nebbiolo ripen slowly, preserving aromatic intensity and natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, Massolino follows a traditional approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by a lengthy maturation of around 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. This use of big, neutral barrels respects the purity of Nebbiolo and the character of the terroir, resulting in a Barolo that is both authentic and ageworthy.
Food & Serving
Massolino Barolo 2019 is a superb partner for classic Piedmontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (braised beef), tajarin pasta with rich ragù, or veal shank osso buco. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, roasted lamb, truffle dishes, porcini risotto and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and freshness. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the floral and mineral notes to emerge; as the wine ages, a shorter decant focused mainly on removing sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
The Massolino family founded their estate in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most revered communes, and has since become synonymous with classically styled, terroir-driven Nebbiolo. Over generations, the family has carefully expanded and refined their holdings in some of the area’s finest vineyards, all while maintaining a staunchly traditional approach in the cellar. Today, Massolino is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the region, known for wines that combine depth and structure with elegance and purity of fruit. Their Barolo bottlings—both the classic cuvée and single-vineyard selections—regularly earn high critical acclaim and are sought after by collectors who value authentic, ageworthy expressions of Piedmont.
