Description
Massolino Barolo 2017 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a classic expression of traditional Barolo from one of Serralunga d'Alba’s benchmark producers. Sourced primarily from estate vineyards in Serralunga with a touch of fruit from Castiglione Falletto, it brings together depth, elegance and a finely etched structure. The warm, dry 2017 vintage could have produced a heavy wine, yet Massolino has crafted a Barolo that feels almost delicate, with beautifully balanced fruit and savory notes.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a typical and promising sign of Nebbiolo’s evolution. The nose opens gently with sun-warmed red berries, blackcurrant and exotic plum, unfolding into scents of dried rose petals, subtle spice and a hint of iron-rich, red earth.
On the palate, this is a refined, almost fragile Barolo by vintage standards, with a graceful medium body supported by fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of wild cherry, redcurrant and black plum weave together with notes of anise, dried herbs, and a whisper of rust and tobacco. The balance between fruit, acidity and tannin is particularly harmonious, giving the wine a poised, classical feel despite the warm year. In magnum, its aging potential is enhanced: expect it to drink beautifully from now with aeration, and evolve further complexity over the next 10–15 years, possibly longer under proper cellaring.
Production
The fruit for this Barolo comes predominantly from Massolino’s vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, an area known for its calcareous marl and clay soils that give Nebbiolo its structure, minerality and longevity, with a small portion from Castiglione Falletto adding nuance and perfume. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard. In keeping with classic Barolo methods, the wine is fermented with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by maturation in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks. This approach allows the character of Nebbiolo and the Serralunga terroir to shine through without overt influence of new oak.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom-based pastas, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino. Its structure and earthy undertones also pair beautifully with dishes featuring porcini, roasted root vegetables, and slow-cooked lamb. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. Given its youth and magnum format, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins.
Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the historic family estates of Serralunga d’Alba and a reference point for traditional Barolo. Over generations, the Massolino family has carefully expanded and refined their vineyard holdings in some of Barolo’s most prized sites, always maintaining a classic, terroir-driven style. Their wines are celebrated for their purity, balance and capacity to age, and Massolino is widely regarded as a key ambassador for Serralunga’s powerful yet elegant expression of Nebbiolo within the broader Barolo region.
