Description

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2021 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most respected hillside crus. In this vintage, the wine already shows vivid notes of redcurrant and tangy wild berries, wrapped in a poised, structured frame. Produced in a tiny release of just 4,000 bottles, it’s a collectible Piedmont red with the elegance and tension to evolve beautifully over time. The unique selling point of this Barbaresco is its combination of precision and complexity: a wine that feels fluid and ever‑shifting in the glass, revealing new nuances with each swirl. Distinctive hints of iron, rust and mineral edge add character to the pure red fruit, giving it a slightly “metallic” savouriness that is very typical of great Nebbiolo from serious terroir. Albesani is a historic Barbaresco vineyard, and this bottling underscores its status as one of the appellation’s great crus, balancing perfume, structure and longevity in equal measure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Barbaresco Albesani shows a luminous, medium ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim—youthful but already suggesting the classic Nebbiolo evolution to come. The nose is lifted and incisive, with crunchy redcurrant, sour cherry and wild strawberry at the forefront, followed by blood orange zest, rose petals and a more savory layer of iron filings, rusted nail and a faint hint of dried herbs. As it opens, you may notice subtle notes of licorice, tar, and underbrush, underscoring its dynamic and evolving aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied but firmly structured, with vibrant acidity and finely etched tannins that frame the bright, tangy red fruit. Flavors of red berries, pomegranate and cranberry interplay with mineral and ferrous tones, giving a slightly saline, mouthwatering finish. The texture is fluid and graceful rather than heavy, with an elegant, elongated finish that carries notes of spice and rose. While already complex and expressive, the tension in the tannins and acidity suggests strong aging potential: it should drink well from the mid‑2020s and continue to gain tertiary nuances—dried flowers, truffle, forest floor—over 10–15 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
The Barbaresco Albesani 2021 is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo sourced from the Albesani cru, a renowned hillside vineyard in the Barbaresco area with calcareous clay and marl soils that lend both elegance and structure. The exposure and altitude here favor slow, even ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic lift while allowing the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only the healthiest, optimally ripe bunches make it into the cellar. In keeping with Massolino’s classic Piedmontese style, vinification is traditional: a careful destemming and fermentation in temperature‑controlled vats, with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complex aromatics. The wine is then aged—most often in large, neutral oak casks—to respect the purity of the Nebbiolo fruit and the character of the Albesani terroir, before being bottled in limited quantities.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that complement its structure and aromatics. Think veal or beef carpaccio, roasted lamb, braised veal shank, game birds, or rich poultry dishes with truffles and wild mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino, and classic Piedmontese fare like tajarin with ragù or risotto with porcini. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, this wine benefits from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the nose to unfold fully; as it gains age, a gentle splash‑decant to remove sediment and a shorter aeration period will be sufficient.

Producer
Massolino is a historic family estate based in Serralunga d’Alba in the heart of Piedmont, founded in 1896 and long celebrated for its classic, age‑worthy Nebbiolo. Over the years, the Massolino family has built a reputation as one of the benchmark producers of traditional Barolo, and more recently has extended its expertise to key Barbaresco crus such as Albesani. Their wines are prized for their fidelity to site, their balance of power and finesse, and their ability to age gracefully for decades. By combining meticulous vineyard work with restrained, traditional winemaking—large casks, long macerations, and minimal intervention—Massolino has become a reference point in the Langhe, consistently earning acclaim from critics and collectors alike for their pure, terroir‑driven expressions of Nebbiolo.
