Description

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2020 in magnum format captures the poise and perfume of Barbaresco from one of Neive’s most respected crus. This single-vineyard bottling shows remarkable balance even in its youth, with a finely etched structure that promises graceful evolution in large format. The 1.5 L magnum underscores its collectible nature, ideal for the cellar or the center of a special table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barbaresco Albesani shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even at a relatively young stage. The nose is expressive and refined, offering layers of dark berries, blackcurrant, and wild cherry interwoven with blue flowers, violet, and hints of crushed limestone. Floral tones are particularly intense and pure, adding lift and complexity. On the palate, this Barbaresco is taut yet already harmonious, with very fine, silk-like tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Dark berry and blackcurrant notes return alongside subtle licorice, rose petal, and a chalky mineral drive that extends through the long, focused finish. The 2020 vintage lends an appealing approachability now, but the wine has the structure to age in magnum for 12–18 years or longer, gradually developing more truffle, leather, and dried floral nuances over time.

Production
Sourced from the historic Albesani cru in the village of Neive, this Barbaresco reflects a hillside terroir of calcareous marl and limestone-rich soils that naturally enhance Nebbiolo’s aromatic intensity and firm structure. The vines benefit from a classic Piedmontese climate of warm days and cool nights, helping to preserve freshness and fragrance in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional vinification methods are employed: a gentle, extended maceration on the skins to draw out color, tannin, and aroma, followed by maturation in large oak casks that respect the character of the vineyard. The result is a precise expression of Albesani, produced in limited quantities (around 4,000 bottles) to preserve quality and identity.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural partner to refined, savory dishes: think veal chops with sage, braised beef or lamb, roasted game birds, or rich risottos with porcini mushrooms and Parmigiano Reggiano. It also shines alongside truffle-inflected dishes and aged hard cheeses that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. In magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant will suffice primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Piedmont’s benchmark family estates, known for its steadfast commitment to traditional Barolo and, increasingly, for its compelling Barbaresco bottlings. Over several generations, the Massolino family has built a reputation for wines that faithfully convey site and vintage, emphasizing classic methods and large cask aging over transient fashion. Their move into Neive’s esteemed Albesani cru underscores the estate’s dedication to showcasing great terroirs across the Langhe. Consistently well-regarded by international critics and collectors alike, Massolino stands as a key reference point for those seeking elegant, age-worthy Nebbiolo from the heart of Piemonte.
