Description

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2020 is a beautifully poised expression of Nebbiolo from one of Neive’s most esteemed crus. This single-vineyard bottling shows remarkable balance and refinement even in its youth, standing alongside Massolino’s benchmark Barolo wines in terms of pedigree and aging potential. Produced in very limited quantities, it offers a deeply nuanced, site-specific glimpse into classic Barbaresco terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Albesani presents a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of high-quality Nebbiolo. The nose opens with dark berry tones—black cherry, wild raspberry and cassis—woven together with blue flowers, dried rose petals and hints of violet. Beneath the floral lift, there are notes of crushed chalk, subtle licorice, sweet spices and a whisper of blood orange zest that give the bouquet both intensity and finesse. On the palate, this Barbaresco is elegant yet structured, with a medium to full body and a striking interplay between ripe fruit depth and refined tannins. Silky, ultra-fine tannins frame flavors of blackcurrant, morello cherry and plum, layered with graphite, crushed stone, tobacco leaf and a delicate savory edge. The finish is long, vertical and mouthwatering, with a persistent mineral line and floral echo. Already surprisingly accessible, it will continue to gain complexity and harmony over the next 10–15 years, and likely longer in optimal cellaring conditions.

Production
Albesani is a historic hillside cru in the village of Neive, characterized by calcareous marl soils with a high limestone content that naturally limit yields and give Nebbiolo its refined tannic structure and mineral drive. The south to southwest exposure and moderate altitude ensure excellent ripening while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. Massolino harvests the Nebbiolo grapes by hand, selecting only perfectly mature clusters from this single vineyard. After a gentle crushing and destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with an extended maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins, while maintaining elegance. The wine is then aged in large traditional oak casks—designed to respect the purity of fruit and terroir expression—before a further period of bottle rest prior to release, resulting in a Barbaresco that is both authentic and ageworthy.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural partner for refined Piedmontese cuisine: think tajarin pasta with white truffle, brasato al Barolo (braised beef), veal roast, or dishes featuring porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, lamb, rich poultry preparations and aged firm cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Asiago. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s floral and mineral complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the great traditional estates of the Langhe, long celebrated for its classic, ageworthy Barolo. Still family-owned and run, the winery has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a deep respect for terroir, expressing each cru with clarity and restraint. Their move into Barbaresco—particularly with a single-vineyard wine from the prestigious Albesani cru in Neive—underscores their commitment to showcasing the full potential of Nebbiolo across Piedmont’s finest sites. Massolino’s wines regularly feature among the top-rated in the region, praised for their combination of power, finesse and longevity.
