Description

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2019 is a super-classic, finely etched expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers. This debut vintage from the Albesani cru balances vibrant acidity and firm, lively tannins with beautifully inviting fruit. Crafted in tiny quantities from a warm, south-facing site, it captures both the power and elegance that define top-tier Barbaresco.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Barbaresco Albesani shows a luminous garnet hue with classic Nebbiolo transparency and a delicate brick rim just beginning to form. The nose opens with dark cherries and blackcurrants layered over rose petals, dried violet, sweet spice and a subtle hint of toasted bread, underpinned by stony, mineral notes. On the palate, this is precise and energetic, with clear, linear acidity driving the wine forward and finely grained but assertive tannins providing impressive structure. Flavors of wild cherry, blackcurrant, blood orange and red plum unfold into nuances of anise, tobacco, baking spice and crushed rock. The finish is long, savory and tightly woven, suggesting excellent cellaring capacity. While already expressive with air, this 2019 has the depth and structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15+ years in the cellar.

Production
Sourced from a mere 0.6-hectare parcel in the historic Albesani cru in Barbaresco, this wine reflects a warm, well-exposed site at around 230 meters above sea level, where calcareous clay and marl soils give both power and aromatic precision. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and aromatic complexity. In the cellar, Massolino follows a traditional, minimalist approach: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and terroir expression, followed by aging in large oak casks to integrate structure without overwhelming the fruit, before bottling with minimal intervention to maintain purity and longevity.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, veal shank, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also shines alongside game birds, roasted lamb and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy, spicy notes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the complex bouquet to fully unfurl.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in the village of Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is a benchmark family estate in Piedmont, renowned for its classically styled Barolo and, more recently, for its meticulously crafted Barbaresco. Over generations, the Massolino family has built up an enviable collection of top crus and has become a reference point for traditional Nebbiolo, combining meticulous vineyard work with understated, time-honored winemaking. Their move into Barbaresco, including the Albesani bottling, has been widely praised by critics and collectors alike, further cementing the estate’s reputation as one of the key interpreters of Piedmont’s greatest terroirs.
