Description

Massolino Barbaresco 2021 is a beautifully poised expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers. This non-cru bottling, easily recognized by its white label, blends fruit from several prized Barbaresco vineyards to deliver classic character with immediate charm. It offers a refined balance of ripe, savory aromatics and vibrant structure, capturing the finesse of Barbaresco in a youthful, approachable style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Barbaresco shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-tinged edges typical of Nebbiolo even at a young age. The bouquet leans toward the more mature side of the Nebbiolo spectrum, with lifted notes of redcurrant, wild berries, mineral tones, and dried flowers, alongside hints of rose petal, subtle spice, and a delicate earthy undertone. On the palate, the wine is fresh, taut, and mouthwatering, driven by lively acidity and finely woven tannins. The texture has extra “fiber” and density in this vintage, giving a satisfying sense of grip without heaviness. Flavors of sour cherry, redcurrant, pomegranate, and dried herbs are layered with mineral notes and a gentle savory edge. While already very enjoyable, its structure suggests several years of positive evolution in bottle; expect it to drink well over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softer contours with time.

Production
This Barbaresco is a blend of Nebbiolo from three highly regarded sites in the Barbaresco appellation: Serraboella, Albesani, and Starderi, each contributing its own nuance of fruit, structure, and aromatics. The vineyards sit on classic Piedmontese marl and limestone soils, which help shape the wine’s minerality, perfume, and firm yet elegant tannins. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure careful selection at the vine, preserving only the best bunches. In the cellar, Massolino follows a traditional vinification approach, with gentle fermentation and maceration designed to extract Nebbiolo’s aromatic complexity and fine-grained tannins rather than raw power. The wine is then matured (typically in large oak casks) to harmonize structure and aromatics while maintaining purity of fruit. Around 24,000 bottles were produced in the 2021 vintage.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb partner for classic Piedmontese cuisine and refined, savory dishes. Pair it with tajarin pasta with meat ragù, mushroom risotto, veal shank, roast lamb, braised beef, or game birds, as well as aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Taleggio. It also shines alongside truffle dishes and earthy preparations featuring porcini or other wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); a gentle decant of 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open up the bouquet and smooth the tannins, while older bottles will need less time in a decanter.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the benchmark family estates of Piedmont, renowned above all for its classic Barolo but increasingly admired for its elegant, site-expressive Barbaresco. Managed across several generations, the estate has remained faithful to traditional methods—long macerations, aging in large casks, and meticulous work in the vineyard—while continuously refining quality. Massolino’s deep roots in the Langhe and its stewardship of top crus have made it a reference point for Nebbiolo lovers worldwide, and its Barbaresco bottlings from vineyards such as Serraboella, Albesani, and Starderi showcase the finesse and aromatic intensity that make this corner of Piedmont so prized.
