Description
Massolino Barbaresco 2019 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers. Crafted in limited quantities, it captures the elegance and fine detail that make Barbaresco so beloved, while remaining approachable in its youth. This vintage showcases the classic profile of the region’s gentle hills: aromatic, finely etched and beautifully balanced between fruit, florals and minerality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Massolino Barbaresco shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick-red hues at the rim, typical of well-made Nebbiolo. The nose is immediately inviting, with fine and delicate notes of wild berries, crushed raspberry and red cherry, layered with blue flowers such as violet and iris. Subtle tones of licorice, dried rose petals and a distinct crushed stone minerality add complexity and finesse.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet wonderfully poised, with bright, juicy red fruit framed by firm, polished tannins. Flavors of wild strawberry, sour cherry and red currant unfold alongside hints of anise, tea leaf and a gentle savory undertone. The finish is long, linear and mouthwatering, carried by fresh acidity and that signature Barbaresco grip. While already accessible and enjoyable now, this 2019 has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further nuance and tertiary notes with time in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco area of Piedmont, this wine reflects a terroir of calcareous-clay soils and rolling, south- and south-west–facing hills that favor both aromatic lift and refined structure. The climate is continental with marked diurnal temperature swings, helping to preserve freshness and perfume in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Massolino follows a classically inspired vinification: temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma in a measured way, followed by aging in large oak casks to respect the purity of Nebbiolo and the character of Barbaresco. The total production of this 2019 release is around 10,000 bottles, underscoring its artisanal scale.
Food & Serving
Massolino Barbaresco 2019 is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes that complement Nebbiolo’s structure and aromatics. It pairs beautifully with veal or beef carpaccio, truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with ragù, roasted game birds, braised lamb, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its floral and mineral nuances; avoid serving it too warm, which can exaggerate the alcohol and tannin. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.
Producer
Founded in 1896 in the historic village of Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the great family-run estates of Piedmont, renowned for its classically styled Barolo and, increasingly, for its eloquent expressions of Nebbiolo from neighboring appellations like Barbaresco. Over generations, the Massolino family has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, traditional winemaking and an unwavering commitment to expressing each terroir with clarity and authenticity. Their wines are frequently praised by international critics and collectors alike, and they are widely regarded as a benchmark for how Nebbiolo can combine depth, elegance and longevity while remaining true to the character of the Langhe hills.
