Description
Masseto Massetino 2023 is the latest expression of Masseto’s celebrated “second wine,” now increasingly recognized as a standalone wine in its own right. Crafted in Bolgheri from primarily Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it captures the character of Tuscany’s blue-clay slopes with a style that balances richness, precision, and coastal freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Massetino 2023 shows a deep youthful ruby color with violet reflections. The nose is generous and finely drawn, offering dark cherry, plum, wild berries, and blueberry, lifted by notes of violet, fresh rosemary, graphite, and a subtle cocoa spice.
The palate is juicy, textured, and beautifully balanced, combining ripe fruit with bright, lively acidity that gives the wine poise and energy. Silky tannins provide structure without heaviness, leading to a long, defined finish where red and dark berry fruit mingle with delicate spice and a hint of saline minerality. It already feels approachable, yet has the balance to age gracefully over the coming years.
Production
The 2023 vintage in Bolgheri benefited from a mild, well-watered winter, a calm spring, and a summer shaped by warm periods moderated by cooling sea breezes. These conditions allowed for even ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic detail while building density and structure in the fruit. The vineyards’ blue-clay soils contribute to the wine’s mineral edge and distinctive sense of place.
Each parcel was harvested separately by hand at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, fermentation took place in concrete tanks with gentle, precise extraction to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barriques, with a carefully judged proportion of new oak to add texture and depth without overpowering the wine. It was then aged for 12 months in barrel before a final period in concrete prior to bottling.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, braised veal, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for about 30–60 minutes is recommended if drinking young, to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Masseto is one of Tuscany’s most iconic names, known for producing some of Italy’s most sought-after Merlot-based wines from its celebrated Bolgheri site. Massetino began as the estate’s second wine, but in recent years it has evolved into a distinct and highly respected cuvée that showcases a different facet of the same exceptional terroir. The estate has earned an international reputation for precision, depth, and craftsmanship, and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in modern Italian fine wine.
