Description
Masseto 2021 is a pure, unapologetic expression of Tuscan Merlot from one of Italy’s most coveted single vineyards. Returning to a 100% Merlot blend, this vintage underlines the estate’s faith in its clay-rich coastal terroir, even in the face of warming climates. Monumental in structure, richness, and personality, Masseto 2021 stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s most iconic collectible wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Masseto 2021 shows a deep, opaque ruby core with violet highlights, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, opening with confit blackberry, ripe and slightly cooked dark cherries, and plum compote, wrapped in a generous cloak of sweet oak spice. Notes of dark chocolate, vanilla pod, clove, and a hint of creamy mint fondant unfold with air, giving a sense of both power and polish.
On the palate, this is a full-throttle Merlot with tremendous extract, dense fruit weight, and firm, mouth-coating tannins. The 15.5% alcohol is integrated into the wine’s broad, velvety texture, but adds to the impression of sheer scale and opulence. Flavors of black cherry liqueur, blackberry jam, cocoa, espresso, and warm baking spices dominate, with a long, resonant finish marked by dark chocolate and a touch of minty freshness. At this stage the wine is bold, almost monolithic, and clearly built for the long haul; additional bottle age is not just recommended but essential, with optimal drinking likely starting after several years and extending over two or more decades in a suitable cellar.
Production
Masseto comes from a famed single vineyard on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, where maritime breezes temper the Mediterranean sun and distinctive blue clay soils give Merlot remarkable depth and structure. The 2021 vintage marks a return to 100% Merlot, highlighting the estate’s original vision for this site. Grapes are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the finest berries are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, with attentive extraction to manage the naturally abundant tannins and concentration. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques—many of them new—allowing the sweet spice, chocolate tones, and polished texture to develop while preserving the vineyard’s signature richness and intensity.
Food & Serving
Given its power and density, Masseto 2021 calls for equally grand cuisine: think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal shanks, roasted lamb with herbs, truffled veal jus, or game dishes like venison with dark berry reduction. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours in its youth—to allow the wine to unwind and reveal more nuance from beneath its formidable structure.
Producer
Masseto is produced by the prestigious estate linked to Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri, and has, in just a few decades, risen to become one of Italy’s most sought-after and collectible wines. Born from a single, uniquely endowed Merlot vineyard overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Masseto helped redefine what Italian Merlot could achieve on the world stage, often mentioned in the same breath as the greatest Right Bank Bordeaux. With consistently high critical acclaim, limited production, and a track record for long-lived, profound wines, Masseto holds a singular place not only in Tuscany, but in the global fine wine landscape.
