Description
Masseto 2020 in magnum format (1.5 L) is the latest chapter in one of Tuscany’s most sought-after cult wines, now with a subtle yet meaningful twist to its DNA. Still rooted in its Merlot core, this vintage introduces a touch of Cabernet Franc, adding extra lift, structure, and aromatic complexity to an already legendary wine. 2020 is a powerful, concentrated year at Masseto—everything feels dialed up: depth, intensity, and even the wine’s commanding presence in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Masseto 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple color, hinting at its richness and youthful concentration. The nose opens slowly but impressively, with layers of ripe black plum, black cherry, and blackberry, followed by nuances of violet, graphite, cedar, cocoa, and warm spice. With air, more subtle tones emerge—tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and a faint mineral note recalling wet stone and clay.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense, and tightly woven, with a core of dark, ripe fruit wrapped in velvety yet assertive tannins. The Merlot brings opulence and plush texture, while the Cabernet Franc adds freshness, structure, and a fine-boned tension that carries the long, persistent finish. There is impressive balance for a wine of this power, with well-integrated 15% alcohol and a vibrant line of acidity that promises decades of evolution. In magnum, the aging potential is even greater: it will benefit enormously from patience, ideally resting 10–15 years, and will continue to develop complexity for 25+ years in a good cellar.
Production
Masseto comes from a single, famed vineyard on the Tuscan coast near Bolgheri, planted on rare blue clay soils that are central to the wine’s character. This demanding terroir, combined with maritime breezes and warm, sunny days, produces low yields of exceptionally concentrated Merlot and a carefully selected portion of Cabernet Franc. The fruit is harvested by hand in small parcels, allowing meticulous selection of bunches and optimal ripeness, especially important in a warm vintage like 2020. Each parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance while capturing depth. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for an extended period, followed by further time in bottle, allowing the components to harmonize and the wine’s unmistakable Masseto identity to fully emerge.
Food & Serving
Given its power and refinement, Masseto 2020 is best paired with richly flavored, elevated dishes: slow-braised beef or veal, roasted lamb with herbs, venison, or truffle-infused dishes. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino, and simple preparations that let the wine take center stage. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–65°F) to keep the alcohol in balance and preserve aromatic detail. For a young vintage like 2020, especially in magnum, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours before serving, and even longer if opened within its first decade—to allow the wine to unfurl and reveal its layered complexity.
Producer
Masseto is produced by the same team behind Ornellaia on the Tuscan coast, but it stands apart as a singular, estate-driven icon built around a single vineyard of Merlot. Since its debut in the 1980s, Masseto has become one of Italy’s most coveted and collectible wines, often compared to the great Merlot-based wines of Pomerol while retaining an unmistakably Tuscan character. Its blue-clay vineyard, meticulous viticulture, and precision winemaking have earned Masseto consistent critical acclaim and status as one of the world’s benchmark luxury reds. The introduction of Cabernet Franc in the blend marks a subtle evolution of style, underscoring the estate’s constant refinement while preserving the depth, sensuality, and identity that have made Masseto a modern legend.
