Description

Masciarelli Castello di Semivicoli Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Superiore 2022 is a refined expression of Abruzzo’s native white grape, crafted from high-altitude vineyards surrounding the historic Semivicoli castle. This is not your everyday Trebbiano: it’s a concentrated, mineral-driven white with real depth and a strong sense of place. Classified as “Superiore,” it comes from lower-yielding vines and more exacting standards, resulting in a wine that marries elegance, freshness and structure. Rooted in the hills of Abruzzo, it showcases how far the region’s white wines have come in terms of quality and personality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Superiore is typically pale straw to light golden with luminous clarity and a slight greenish reflex, signalling its brightness and youth. The nose is inviting and layered: expect notes of lemon zest, white peach and crisp green apple, wrapped in accents of wild herbs, chamomile, almond blossom and a saline, almost sea-breeze character. Subtle hints of wet stone and delicate spice point to careful élevage and time on the lees. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied yet finely structured, with a vibrant, linear acidity that keeps everything focused and refreshing. Flavours echo the nose—citrus, stone fruit and orchard fruit—supported by a core of chalky minerality and a gentle, savoury undertone. The texture is sleek but not lean, with a slight creaminess from lees contact that adds volume without heaviness. The finish is long and clean, marked by citrus peel, almond and a lingering saline snap. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it has the balance to develop nicely over the next 3–6 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty complexity while retaining its backbone.

Production
The grapes for Castello di Semivicoli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Superiore are sourced from hillside vineyards in Abruzzo, often at higher elevations where cooler nights help lock in acidity and aromatic precision. The soils are typically a mix of calcareous clay and stony substrates, which encourage low yields and contribute to the wine’s distinct mineral character. Harvest is usually carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness, often in the early morning to preserve freshness. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed, and the must is fermented at controlled temperatures—partly in stainless steel to protect the delicate aromatics, and in some vintages partly in larger oak or neutral vessels to add texture and complexity without overt wood flavours. Extended aging on fine lees with periodic bâtonnage enhances mouthfeel, integration and length, giving the wine its characteristic blend of tension and subtle creaminess.

Food & Serving
This Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Superiore is a superb match for refined seafood and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Think grilled prawns, seared scallops, linguine alle vongole, delicate white fish, or crudo and carpaccio with citrus and olive oil. It also pairs beautifully with poultry, lightly creamy pastas, risotto with spring vegetables, and soft to semi-hard cheeses such as young pecorino or fresh goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to let the aromatics open up. A brief 20–30 minutes in a decanter, or simply some time in the glass, can help the wine express its full aromatic range, especially if served in its first few years.

Producer
Masciarelli is one of Abruzzo’s leading modern estates, founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli with a clear mission: to show that the region’s native grapes—Trebbiano and Montepulciano—could yield wines of world-class quality. Over the decades, the winery has become a benchmark for Abruzzo, combining a wide range of vineyard sites with meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar. Castello di Semivicoli, a beautifully restored 17th-century baronial palace in the province of Chieti, serves both as a hospitality center and the heart of the estate’s premium white wine production. Masciarelli’s commitment to low yields, careful vineyard selection and terroir-driven winemaking has earned it international recognition and helped redefine the reputation of Abruzzo, placing its wines firmly on the map of serious Italian enology.
