Description
Mas del Périé – Fabien Jouves La Pièce - Bloc B763 2015 is a rare, single-parcel expression of Malbec from the limestone plateaus above Cahors in South-West France. Crafted in tiny quantities and now down to the last few bottles, it captures the tension between power and finesse that has made Jouves a benchmark in the region. This cuvée reflects a precise block (“Bloc B763”) within the estate, offering a snapshot of place, vintage, and Fabien Jouves’ low-intervention philosophy in one deeply characterful wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Pièce - Bloc B763 2015 shows an intense, almost opaque dark purple core with a deep garnet rim, reflecting both varietal concentration and a few years of graceful evolution. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe black plum, blackberry compote, and cassis unfold alongside black olive, violets, and graphite, with subtle notes of cacao, cedar, dried herbs, and a hint of smoked tea emerging with air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with dense black fruit framed by vibrant acidity and finely sculpted tannins. Flavors of black cherry, mulberry, and wild berries are interwoven with licorice, cracked pepper, and a mineral, almost saline edge that speaks clearly of the limestone soils. The texture is velvety but not heavy, finishing long with notes of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and cool stone. The 2015 vintage was generous and ripe, and this wine still has a firm backbone; well-stored bottles have strong aging potential for another 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and dried flowers.
Production
Mas del Périé sits on the high limestone and clay-limestone slopes above Cahors, where altitude, rocky soils, and breezy exposures give Malbec an uncommon freshness and precision. Fabien Jouves farms biodynamically, with strict attention to soil health, biodiversity, and low yields, often harvesting by hand in small crates to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes from each specific parcel make it into cuvées like La Pièce - Bloc B763. In the cellar, Jouves favors a natural, minimalist approach: whole or partial bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts, long, gentle macerations, and gravity-fed movements instead of pumping, followed by élevage in large neutral oak and/or used barrels to preserve purity of fruit and terroir character. Sulfur additions are modest, allowing the wine to express its origin with clarity and energy.
Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Malbec pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, duck confit, grilled ribeye, venison, or a cassoulet and other hearty southwestern French classics. It also works well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Ossau-Iraty, or mature cheddar, and with earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, lentils, or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in a large-bowled red wine glass to let the aromatics fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially at this stage of its life, to soften the tannins, blow off any initial reduction, and reveal the full depth and complexity of the Bloc B763 parcel.
Producer
Mas del Périé, run by Fabien Jouves in Trespoux-Rassiels just outside Cahors, has quickly become one of the most respected and talked-about estates in South-West France. Coming from a family of farmers, Jouves took over the vines and decisively shifted to organic, then biodynamic farming, positioning himself at the forefront of the region’s new wave. His focus on high-altitude, limestone-driven vineyards and strict parcel selection has helped redefine what Malbec from Cahors can be: elegant, vertical, and terroir-driven, rather than simply dense and rustic. Mas del Périé is now widely recognized for its progressive, natural-leaning approach, its precise single-parcel bottlings like La Pièce, and its role in elevating Cahors to the attention of sommeliers and wine lovers around the world.
