Description
Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2022 is one of Languedoc’s most distinctive premium reds, blending Cabernet Sauvignon with a wide range of classic and rare varieties to create a wine of remarkable complexity and character. Often referred to as the “Grand Cru of the Languedoc,” it has helped define the estate’s reputation for making world-class wine in an unexpected corner of southern France.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark berries, cassis, plum, dried herbs, violets, spice, and subtle earthy notes that bring added depth.
On the palate, it is likely to feel structured yet refined, with ripe black fruit, savoury complexity, firm but polished tannins, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps the wine balanced. This is a red built for ageing, and the 2022 vintage should develop additional nuance over time, rewarding patience with greater softness and aromatic complexity.
Production
Mas de Daumas Gassac is based in the Gassac valley in the Languedoc, where the estate benefits from cool influences, well-drained soils, and a microclimate that allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness. The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon alongside a broad selection of supporting varieties, reflecting the estate’s experimental and terroir-driven approach. Harvesting is typically done with careful selection, and vinification aims to preserve the purity of fruit, structure, and aromatic detail.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck, game, and richly flavoured Mediterranean dishes such as herb-crusted lamb or slow-cooked aubergine with spices. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, especially when young.
Producer
Mas de Daumas Gassac is one of the most celebrated producers in southern France, founded by Aimé and Véronique Guibert in the 1970s. The estate gained international recognition for proving that exceptional, age-worthy wines could be made in the Languedoc, and it remains a benchmark producer known for quality, originality, and consistency.
