Description

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cuvée Emile Peynaud Rouge is one of the most distinctive wines from the Languedoc, blending Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc into a magnum format that feels both generous and age-worthy. The 2015 vintage reflects the estate’s signature style: refined, deeply structured, and made with the seriousness usually associated with the world’s great classified growths. Named in tribute to the legendary Bordeaux professor and consultant Emile Peynaud, it carries a real sense of heritage and ambition.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby to garnet color with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and complex, offering dark berries, cassis, plum, graphite, cedar, violets, and subtle notes of spice and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied and focused, with firm yet polished tannins, lively freshness, and a long, savory finish. The blend brings together Cabernet structure, Merlot softness, and the spicy, age-worthy depth of Petit Verdot. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and the magnum format should help it evolve beautifully over many years, gaining more nuance and silkiness with time.

Production
Produced in the Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert IGP in Languedoc, the wine comes from the renowned Mas de Daumas Gassac estate, where the vineyards are known for their diverse soils, natural balance, and favorable Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling influences. Harvesting is typically carried out with careful selection to preserve fruit purity and freshness, and vinification is done with a focus on gentle extraction and precision to maintain the elegance of the blend.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef fillet, game, braised short ribs, and dishes with mushrooms or earthy herbs. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help the wine show its full aromatic range and soften its structure.

Producer
Mas de Daumas Gassac is one of the most respected estates in southern France, often referred to as a benchmark producer for the Languedoc. Founded by Aimé and Véronique Guibert, the winery helped redefine the region’s reputation by proving that world-class, Cabernet-based wines could be made there. Its reputation has been built on quality, originality, and a pioneering spirit that continues to earn international recognition.
