Description

Château Margaux 1998 is a classic expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growths, offering the refinement, perfume, and precision that have made the estate legendary. Crafted from the traditional Margaux blend, it combines Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure with Merlot’s supple depth and the seasoning of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. As a 1998 from a historic Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, it reflects both the prestige of the property and the distinctive elegance of the Margaux appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with softened ruby edges, hinting at graceful maturity. The bouquet is expected to unfold with layers of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, violets, tobacco leaf, graphite, and subtle earthy spice, with the floral lift so often associated with Margaux wines. On the palate, this is usually medium- to full-bodied, polished, and finely textured, with ripe dark fruit wrapped in fine tannins and bright, poised acidity. As it matures, tertiary notes of leather, truffle, dried herbs, and forest floor emerge, while the finish remains long and impeccably balanced. A well-stored bottle should still offer strong drinking pleasure, though it is likely now in, or approaching, its mature window.

Production
Produced in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, this wine comes from gravel-rich soils that favor Cabernet Sauvignon, helping bring finesse, aromatic detail, and structure. Harvested by hand and vinified with meticulous attention typical of a First Growth estate, the grapes are usually fermented in temperature-controlled vats before aging in French oak barrels, where the wine gains complexity, texture, and the hallmark polish associated with Château Margaux.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, venison, or mushroom-based preparations, which complement the wine’s aromatic complexity and silky tannins. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if the bottle is still youthful or if sediment is present; for an older bottle, a gentle decant shortly before serving is ideal.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated and historic estates, classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Long regarded as a benchmark for elegance and longevity in fine wine, the estate has helped define the Margaux style and remains one of the most admired names in the region, with a reputation built on consistency, prestige, and exceptional craftsmanship.
