Description
Margarethenhof’s Kalkstein Elbling 2022 is a crisp, terroir-driven white that showcases one of Europe’s oldest grape varieties in a beautifully modern Mosel interpretation. Grown on limestone soils in the southern Mosel, it delivers freshness, mineral precision, and lively fruit, shaped by the Weber family’s distinct vineyard sites between the Saar and Mosel rivers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a pale, bright straw color with a lively sheen. The nose is fresh and direct, offering green apple, citrus zest, and a pronounced stony mineral character.
On the palate, this Elbling is light-footed and refreshing, with clean acidity, juicy citrus, and a subtle saline edge that reflects its limestone origin. It’s a wine built for immediate enjoyment, though its mineral backbone should allow it to stay vibrant for a few years.
Production
Margarethenhof is based in Ayl, where the family works vineyards spread across two very different terroirs: the limestone soils of the southern Mosel and the slate-rich slopes along the Saar. The Kalkstein Elbling comes from the limestone sites, which naturally lend the wine its freshness, structure, and mineral-driven profile. Since the 2020 vintage, Nicolas Weber has been the winemaker, favoring a close-to-nature approach with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar, balancing tradition with experimentation.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for light seafood, freshwater fish, salads, asparagus, and simple vegetable dishes, as well as classic German or Alsace-style fare. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C; decanting is not necessary, but a short time in the glass will help the aromatic clarity come through.
Producer
Margarethenhof is a family-run estate in Ayl on the Mosel, set in a privileged position between the Mosel and Saar rivers. The Weber family’s vineyards benefit from a rare range of terroirs, from limestone to steep slate slopes, giving the estate impressive stylistic diversity. With Nicolas Weber now at the helm in the cellar, the domaine is bringing a fresh, thoughtful energy to its long-standing regional identity.
