Description
Margarethenhof’s Grauer Burgunder Trocken 2023 is a fresh, characterful Mosel white that brings together ripe fruit, mineral precision and a pleasantly dry finish. Crafted by the Weber family in the village of Ayl, it reflects the estate’s unique position between the Mosel and Saar, where contrasting terroirs shape a distinctive style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Gris shows a clear, bright white-wine profile with an inviting, lively appearance. The nose opens with attractive stone fruit aromas, while the palate is juicy and playful, lifted by a subtle spice and fresh, well-balanced acidity.
A distinct mineral thread runs through the finish, giving the wine both definition and length. Enjoy it now for its freshness and energy, though it should hold nicely for a few years if you prefer a little more integration and softness.
Production
Margarethenhof is based in Ayl, where the family’s vineyards are spread across both the Saar and the southern Weinmosel. This gives the estate access to very different soils: limestone on the southern Weinmosel, which is ideal for fuller Burgunder-style wines, and slate on the steep Saar slopes, known for producing mineral-driven, versatile wines. Since the 2020 vintage, winemaking has been led by Nicolas Weber, a trained oenologist who works as naturally as possible in both vineyard and cellar, combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern, experimental mindset.
Food & Serving
Serve this dry Grauer Burgunder lightly chilled at around 8–10°C. It works beautifully with roasted poultry, pork, creamy pasta dishes, mushroom risotto, grilled fish or vegetable dishes, and it is also a strong match for lightly spiced cuisine. Decanting is not necessary.
Producer
Margarethenhof is a family-run estate with vineyards in one of the Mosel region’s most interesting crossroads, between the Saar and the south-facing stretches of the Weinmosel. The Weber family benefits from exceptional vineyard sites, including the dramatic Ayler Kupp slate hill nearby, and has built a reputation for wines that balance regional character, finesse and drinkability. Under Nicolas Weber’s direction, the estate continues to evolve with a focus on low-intervention winemaking and a respectful approach to nature.
