Description
Margarethenhof’s Ayler Kupp Riesling Auslese 2021 comes from one of the Saar’s most exciting steep slate vineyards, just outside the village of Ayl. Here, the Weber family combines traditional Mosel craftsmanship with a modern, low-intervention approach, resulting in a Riesling that balances vibrant freshness with elegant sweetness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Auslese typically shows a bright, luminous color with the clarity and finesse expected from a high-quality Mosel Riesling. The nose is expressive and refined, with aromas of ripe stone fruit, citrus, and floral notes layered over a distinctive mineral edge from the slate slopes.
On the palate, it offers a beautiful interplay between juicy acidity and gentle sweetness, giving the wine both lift and balance. The finish is precise and mineral-driven, with enough concentration to suggest excellent drinking now and the potential to develop additional complexity over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from Ayler Kupp, a steep Saar site known for its slate soils and cool climate, which help preserve freshness while building aromatic intensity. Margarethenhof’s vineyards are spread between the Saar and the southern Weinmosel, but this wine reflects the character of the slate-rich Saar terroir. Since the 2020 vintage, winemaking has been led by Nicolas Weber, who favors close-to-nature farming and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar, allowing the fruit and site to speak clearly.
Food & Serving
This half-dry Riesling Auslese is an excellent match for pâté, terrines, and other rich or savory appetizers, where its sweetness and acidity create a perfect balance. It also works well with mildly spicy dishes, blue cheese, or fruit-based desserts. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary.
Producer
Margarethenhof is a family-run estate in Ayl, in the Mosel region, where the Webers benefit from vineyards planted across two contrasting terroirs: limestone in the southern Weinmosel and slate on the steep Saar slopes. The estate stands out for its combination of tradition, careful vineyard work, and a progressive winemaking style. Under Nicolas Weber’s direction, the winery has continued to refine its approach, blending craftsmanship, experimentation, and a strong sense of place.
