Description
Margarethenhof’s Ayler Kupp Riesling Alte Reben Feinherb 2021 comes from one of the Saar’s most exciting steep slate slopes, just outside the village of Ayl. Crafted from old vines and shaped by the cool Mosel-Saar interplay, it reflects the estate’s balance of tradition, precision, and a lightly off-dry style that gives the wine both charm and depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, pale straw color with a lively, shimmering clarity. The nose is elegant and expressive, with aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, green apple, and subtle floral tones, all framed by a distinct mineral edge and a hint of smoky slate.
On the palate, it is sleek yet generous, with fine sweetness beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity. The wine offers plenty of elegance and richness, with layered fruit, pronounced minerality, and a long, focused finish. Thanks to its concentration and old-vine structure, it has excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over time.
Production
Margarethenhof is located in Ayl, where the family’s vineyards are split between the southern Mosel and the Saar, two regions with markedly different terroirs. The Ayler Kupp site is a steep slate vineyard that gives the Riesling its mineral tension, finesse, and aromatic complexity. Since the 2020 harvest, winemaking has been led by Nicolas Weber, who works with a nature-focused, low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar, combining careful craftsmanship with a modern, experimental mindset.
Food & Serving
This Feinherb Riesling is a natural match for Asian cuisine, lightly spiced dishes, sushi, shellfish, grilled fish, and pork with fruit accents. It also pairs well with fresh cheeses and dishes with a touch of sweetness or acidity. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C; decanting is not necessary, but a short airing can help open the wine if serving young.
Producer
Margarethenhof is a family-run estate in Ayl on the Mosel, ideally positioned between the Saar and the southern Mosel. The Weber family has built the estate around a diverse set of terroirs, allowing them to produce wines with strong regional character, from limestone-driven Burgundies and Elbling to slate-based Riesling. With Nicolas Weber now at the helm, the estate continues to combine inherited know-how with a fresh, modern vision, and its Ayler Kupp Rieslings stand as the house’s flagship wines.
