Description
Margarethenhof’s Ayler Kupp Riesling is a flagship Mosel white that captures everything lovers of German Riesling look for: steep-slope precision, vibrant minerality, and real depth. Sourced from the renowned Ayler Kupp site in Saar, it reflects the distinctive character of schist soils and the careful, low-intervention approach of the Weber family. This is a wine with both tradition and modern finesse behind it, and plenty of aging potential to reward patience.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling typically shows a bright, luminous pale color with crystalline clarity. The nose is finely etched and expressive, with notes of citrus, green apple, stone fruit, and a distinct mineral thread that recalls wet slate and cool mountain air.
On the palate, it is elegant yet generous, combining ripe fruit with vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone. The wine finishes long and precise, with a sense of richness balanced by freshness. Thanks to its structure and site-driven intensity, it has strong cellaring potential and should develop beautifully over time.
Production
Margarethenhof is based in Ayl, in the Mosel region, where the family’s vineyards are split between the Saar and the southern Weinmosel. This contrast of terroirs shapes the estate’s style, with limestone soils on the southern Mosel bringing breadth and the steep schist slopes near Saar delivering the mineral tension and complexity that define this Riesling. Ayler Kupp, one of the Saar’s most prized steep hills, provides the fruit for this Grosser Gewächs. Since the 2020 vintage, winemaking has been led by Nicolas Weber, an oenologist who works as naturally as possible in both vineyard and cellar, aiming to let the site speak with minimal intervention while combining tradition with experimentation.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for refined dishes such as roast poultry, pork with light cream sauces, shellfish, sashimi, or classic Asian cuisine with gentle spice. It also pairs beautifully with freshwater fish and dishes that feature herbs, citrus, or mineral-driven sauces. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and consider decanting briefly if drinking young to help the wine open up.
Producer
Margarethenhof is a family-run estate in Ayl, perfectly positioned between the Mosel and Saar, two rivers that give the winery access to some of the region’s most characterful vineyard sites. The Weber family’s holdings span very different soils and exposures, allowing them to craft wines with both precision and variety. Under Nicolas Weber’s direction since 2020, the estate has continued to strengthen its reputation for expressive, site-driven Rieslings, with Ayler Kupp standing as the house’s most important and celebrated bottling.
