Description
Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2023 is one of Tuscany’s landmark wines and a defining example of the Super Tuscan style. Produced at Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico, it combines the character of Sangiovese with international varieties and refined French-oak ageing. First released in the 1970s, Tignanello helped redefine the potential of Tuscan red wine.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with youthful purple highlights. Its bouquet is expressive and inviting, offering ripe red fruit, cherries and plums alongside warm spices and subtle, well-integrated oak tones. On the palate, it is powerful yet polished, with vibrant acidity, ripe tannins and a concentrated core of fruit. The finish is long, savoury and persistent, with spice and gentle wood nuances emerging as the wine opens in the glass.
Although approachable with aeration, the 2023 vintage has the structure and freshness to develop beautifully in bottle. It should gain additional complexity over the next 10–15 years, with careful cellaring allowing the fruit, tannins and oak to harmonise further.
Production
Tenuta Tignanello lies between the Pesa and Greve valleys in the Chianti Classico region, where the galestro-rich soils provide excellent drainage and help encourage freshness and aromatic complexity. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified separately by variety in stainless-steel tanks, allowing each component to retain its individual character. The wine is then aged for approximately 12–14 months in French oak barriques before further bottle ageing to promote integration and balance.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted red meat, T-bone steak, game and slow-cooked stews, Tignanello also pairs well with mature, hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal its layered aromas.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1385. The family has played a central role in the modernisation of Tuscan wine, and Tignanello is among its most celebrated achievements: a pioneering Super Tuscan that challenged traditional appellation conventions and demonstrated the extraordinary quality that could be achieved through careful vineyard selection, innovative blending and meticulous ageing. The Antinori team remains one of the leading forces in Italian fine wine.
