Description
The 2021 Solaia from Marchesi Antinori, here in an impressive 6L Imperial, represents one of Tuscany’s most collectible and refined expressions of modern Italian red wine. In this vintage, Solaia leans decisively into elegance and precision, privileging finesse over sheer power while still delivering the depth that has made it a global benchmark. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, it is a striking example of what the Antinori family’s legendary hillside vineyard in the Chianti Classico area can achieve in a great year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2021 is deep, youthful ruby with a vibrant, almost inky core that hints at both concentration and longevity. The nose is layered and seductive: dark plum and blackcurrant intertwine with notes of mocha, licorice, dark chocolate, exotic spice, lavender and a lifted menthol edge, all wrapped in finely judged new oak.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a cool, refined profile. Ripe black fruits are framed by polished, ultra-fine tannins and a beautifully integrated oak signature, giving a sense of effortless structure rather than heaviness. The finish is long, mouth-coating and precise, with lingering notes of cocoa, sweet tobacco, spice and fresh herbs. In this large-format 6L, the aging potential is outstanding: expect a long evolution over 20–30 years or more, with the wine gaining complexity, truffle, cedar and tertiary nuances as it matures.
Production
Solaia is sourced from the sun-drenched Solaia vineyard, a southwest-facing parcel on the Antinori family’s Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of Tuscany’s hills. Here, the mix of galestro and limestone-rich soils, significant day–night temperature shifts and excellent exposure provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats with careful maceration to extract color, aroma and finely tuned tannins. The 2021 vintage spent a total of 18 months in oak: around three months in once-used barriques during malolactic fermentation, followed by 15 months in 100% new French oak, allowing the wine to integrate its structure and develop complexity without losing its signature freshness and balance.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Solaia is a natural match for refined, richly flavored dishes: think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, venison with juniper, truffled veal, or deeply flavored mushroom and pecorino risottos. Mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Tuscan pecorino also work beautifully. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given both its youth and its concentration, especially in an Imperial format, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for near-term enjoyment, and longer if opened in its first decade—to allow the aromas to unfurl and the tannins to fully soften.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest and most influential wine families, with a history dating back to 1385 and a legacy deeply woven into the story of Tuscan wine. From their estates in Chianti Classico and beyond, the Antinoris have been at the forefront of innovation, famously helping to launch the “Super Tuscan” movement with wines like Tignanello and Solaia. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s from a select parcel within the Tenuta Tignanello estate, has since become one of Tuscany’s most sought-after and highly rated wines, consistently earning top scores and cementing Antinori’s reputation as a global reference point for world-class, age-worthy reds.
