Description

Marchesi Antinori’s Solaia 2021 in this rare 3L Double Magnum format is a commanding expression of modern Tuscan luxury. This vintage showcases the estate’s contemporary preference for precision and finesse over sheer power, delivering a wine of depth, poise and remarkable purity. A flagship ‘Super Tuscan’ born from the famed sun-drenched Solaia vineyard, it stands as one of Italy’s most collectible and ageworthy reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2021 reveals an intense, opaque ruby core with a vibrant garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and seductive: dark plum and blackcurrant interwoven with mocha, licorice, dark chocolate, and exotic spice. As it opens, notes of lavender, menthol, and a subtle graphite minerality emerge, giving lift and complexity to the dark-fruited core. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably measured, with a silk-sheathed structure that favors elegance over heaviness. Ripe black fruits—plum, blackberry and cassis—are framed by finely tuned oak, showcasing hints of espresso, sweet tobacco, cocoa nib and warm baking spices. The tannins are firm but ultra-refined, perfectly integrated with vibrant acidity that drives a long, resonant finish. In this 3L Double Magnum, the 2021 Solaia has outstanding aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 20–30 years, gaining further complexity, tertiary nuances and even greater harmony.

Production
Solaia is sourced from the sun-exposed, southwest-facing parcels of the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of the Tuscan hills, within the Chianti Classico area. The vineyard’s mix of marl, limestone and schist, combined with optimal elevation and excellent drainage, gives naturally low yields and superb concentration. The blend typically centers on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese adding aromatic lift, tension and Tuscan identity. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit reaches the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by malolactic fermentation and an extended maturation regime: first about three months in once-used barrels during malolactic, then approximately 15 months in 100% new French oak. The 2021 spent a total of 18 months in wood, with each step carefully calibrated to achieve flawless balance between fruit, structure and oak.

Food & Serving
Solaia 2021 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal, lamb racks with rosemary and garlic, or game birds with truffle and porcini. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the concentration and youth of the 2021 vintage—especially in a 3L Double Magnum—generous aeration is essential: decant at least 2–3 hours before serving for optimal expression, and even longer if enjoyed in its first decade.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with a lineage dating back to 1385. Based in Tuscany, the estate has been at the forefront of redefining Italian fine wine, particularly through its pioneering role in the creation of the ‘Super Tuscan’ category with wines like Tignanello and Solaia. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s, quickly became one of Tuscany’s most coveted reds, consistently earning top scores and international acclaim. Today, Antinori’s meticulous vineyard work, cutting-edge yet sensitive winemaking, and unwavering commitment to quality make Solaia a benchmark for Cabernet-based blends not only in Tuscany, but on the global stage.
