Description

Solaia 2020 in magnum from Marchesi Antinori is one of Tuscany’s modern icons, presented here in the collectors’ 1.5 L format for extended aging and truly memorable occasions. This legendary Super Tuscan is typically a Cabernet Sauvignon–led blend, enriched by Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, uniting international structure with unmistakable Tuscan soul. First released in the late 1970s, Solaia has become a benchmark for Italian fine wine and a fixture in serious cellars worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with youthful purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with lifted floral tones—wild rose, violet and a touch of lilac—layered over ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry and blueberry. Subtle notes of cedar, fine cigar box, graphite and sweet baking spices from carefully selected oak weave through the bouquet, giving complexity without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a refined, polished texture. The Cabernet backbone delivers dark cassis and black plum, while Sangiovese contributes red cherry brightness and a savory, subtly earthy edge. Hints of red meat, cocoa, cinnamon and a whisper of dried flowers emerge with air, supported by taut but silky tannins and a long, focused finish. In magnum, Solaia 2020 has excellent aging potential; it will drink well in its youth after adequate aeration, but will truly reveal its depth and nuance over 12–20+ years in the cellar.

Production
Solaia is sourced from a single, sun-drenched vineyard on the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico hills, where galestro and alberese limestone-clay soils offer ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The grapes are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Fermentation generally takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful maceration to extract color, aroma and finely textured tannins rather than harshness. The wine is then matured in small French oak barriques (largely new) for an extended period, with each variety aged separately before meticulous blending and further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
Solaia 2020 in magnum is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes such as dry-aged bistecca alla Fiorentina, roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison or truffle-accented game dishes. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both freshness and depth. Due to the wine’s youth and concentration—especially in magnum—decanting is strongly recommended: give it at least 2 hours in a large decanter to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in Tuscan viticulture dating back to 1385. Over six centuries and more than 26 generations, Antinori has played a pivotal role in redefining Italian fine wine, particularly through the creation of the Super Tuscans Tignanello and Solaia. From their Chianti Classico heartland to estates across Italy and beyond, Antinori’s philosophy balances tradition with innovation, constantly refining vineyard practices and cellar techniques. Solaia, produced in limited quantities from the estate’s best parcels, has repeatedly earned top scores from international critics and is widely regarded as one of the great wines of Tuscany and of the world.
