Description
Sourced from the legendary Tignanello hillside in the heart of Chianti Classico, Marchesi Antinori Solaia 2020 in Double Magnum (3 L) captures the power and poise that have made this wine one of Italy’s most sought‑after reds. Presented in a large-format bottle ideal for cellaring and special occasions, this vintage marries Tuscan elegance with a modern Super Tuscan richness. The 2020 offers a strikingly aromatic profile and refined structure, standing as a testament to Antinori’s centuries-long pursuit of excellence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2020 shows an intense, deeply saturated ruby-red core with youthful violet reflections, emphasizing its concentration and youth. The nose is immediately lifted and expressive: wild rose, lilac and dried violets lead the way, followed by ripe black cherry, blueberry and cassis layered with subtle notes of red meat, sweet spice, cinnamon, and fine cedar. With air, a signature hint of white, dusty earth and tobacco leaf emerges, adding complexity and a distinctly Tuscan character.
On the palate, this is a bold yet refined red, with a sleek, elongated texture that feels more vertical than broad. Ripe red and dark berries form the core, framed by polished tannins and vibrant acidity that keep the wine energetic rather than heavy. Fine-grained oak is beautifully integrated, adding notes of cocoa, sandalwood and baking spice without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long yet focused, tapering to mineral and floral nuances. In Double Magnum, the 2020 has excellent aging potential: it will begin to drink beautifully after a few more years in bottle and can evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring, with the large format slowing the maturation and preserving freshness.
Production
Solaia is grown on a select, southwest-facing portion of the renowned Tignanello estate in the rolling hills of Toscana, where limestone-rich, well-drained soils and ample sunlight provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. The vines benefit from warm days and cooler nights, which help develop intense aromatics and preserve acidity. Grapes are meticulously harvested by hand, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse in tannin and aroma. The wine then ages in small French oak barriques—predominantly new—where malolactic fermentation and extended maturation refine the texture, integrate the oak and build Solaia’s distinctive depth and complexity before bottling in this impressive 3 L format.
Food & Serving
Solaia 2020 is a natural partner for richly flavored, refined cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, dry‑aged ribeye, or slow‑braised beef short ribs. It also shines alongside game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and balance. Given the wine’s youth and structure—especially in Double Magnum—decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften into a silkier profile.
