Description

Marc Kreydenweiss Riesling Wiebelsberg Grand Cru Bio 2020 is a precise, mineral-driven white from one of Alsace’s most revered terroirs. Crafted from organically and biodynamically farmed Riesling, it captures the tension, aromatic purity and energy that have made Wiebelsberg a benchmark Grand Cru. This vintage balances depth and finesse, reflecting both the character of the sandstone slopes and the Kreydenweiss family’s meticulous, low-intervention approach. Rooted in a long tradition of terroir-focused winemaking, it stands as a refined, ageworthy expression of dry Alsace Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grand Cru Riesling shows a pale lemon to light straw color with green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose opens with lifted aromas of lime zest, lemon oil and white peach, layered with notes of green apple, crushed stone, white flowers and a subtle hint of herbs. With air, more complexity emerges: touches of flint, wet sandstone, and a delicate smoky, saline nuance that is very typical of top hillside sites in Alsace. On the palate, the wine is dry, taut and linear, with vibrant acidity that drives a long, mouthwatering finish. Citrus and stone fruits—grapefruit, lime, and ripe nectarine—interplay with chalky, stony minerality and a fine, almost saline edge. The texture is both precise and elegant, with a core of ripe fruit wrapped in a firm, structured frame. Young, it can appear focused and slightly austere, but this backbone is exactly what gives it excellent aging potential. Over 8–15 years in bottle (and beyond in good cellars), you can expect more honeyed, waxy, and petrol tones to develop, with the minerality becoming even more harmoniously integrated.

Production
The Wiebelsberg Grand Cru lies on steep, south and south-east–facing slopes above Andlau in Alsace, where light, sandy sandstone soils and excellent drainage produce Rieslings of great finesse and pronounced minerality. Famille Kreydenweiss has long been a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region, cultivating the vines without synthetic chemicals and working the soils to encourage deep root systems and healthy microbial life. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, the must is typically fermented with native yeasts in large, neutral foudres or tanks, at controlled but relatively gentle temperatures, preserving the grape’s purity and the site’s signature. Aging on fine lees enhances texture and complexity, while sulfur use is kept modest, resulting in a wine that clearly transmits the character of Wiebelsberg and the 2020 vintage.

Food & Serving
This Riesling’s tension and minerality make it a superb match for refined, delicately flavored dishes. Think shellfish and seafood—oysters, scallops, grilled prawns, sushi and sashimi—as well as trout, pike-perch or other freshwater fish, ideally simply prepared or with citrus- or herb-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with Alsatian classics like choucroute de la mer, tarte flambée with onions, or dishes featuring goat’s cheese and fresh herbs. Aromatic Asian cuisine—such as lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes—also works well, especially when there is a citrus or ginger component. Serve at 8–10 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, helps the wine to open and reveal more of its floral, stony complexity.
