Description
Malescot Saint Exupéry 2017 is a polished Third Growth Margaux that captures the elegance and finesse the appellation is known for. Sourced from one of Bordeaux’s historic classified estates, it offers a refined blend of structure, perfume, and charm that makes it a standout choice for lovers of classic Left Bank Cabernet-led wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby core with a bright, youthful rim. The nose is expressive and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, dark cherry, violets, cedar, and subtle pencil shavings, often followed by hints of spice and graphite.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a graceful balance between ripe black fruit and savory oak-influenced nuance. The finish is persistent and elegant, with enough structure to support several years of bottle aging. While approachable with time in the glass now, it should continue to develop complexity over the next 10–15 years, gaining more earth, tobacco, and truffle-like depth.
Production
Malescot Saint Exupéry benefits from Margaux’s gravelly soils, which naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon and help produce wines with aromatic lift, finesse, and fine tannin. The 2017 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by a relatively early growing season and careful vineyard selection, making precision in harvesting especially important.
The wine is vinified with a focus on preserving purity of fruit and the estate’s signature elegance, with aging in oak barrels to add structure, texture, and complexity without overpowering the wine’s floral and cassis-driven character.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, filet of beef, duck breast, venison, or mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and truffle-accented cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the aromas and tannins to fully open.
