Description
Malartic Lagravière Blanc 2020 is a refined white Bordeaux that beautifully balances bright Sauvignon character with the depth and texture that Pessac-Léognan is known for. This is a polished, modern classic: silky, aromatic, and vibrant without ever feeling heavy. Long regarded as one of the leading dry whites of the Graves area, the estate’s blanc has become a benchmark for Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blends.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Malartic Lagravière Blanc shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with glints of green that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose is expressive and layered: sweet citrus oil (think lemon curd and mandarin zest) mingles with pastry cream, crushed mint, white flowers and subtle Sauvignon herbal tones—more refined botanicals than raw grassiness.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with a silken, almost creamy texture that never tips into heaviness. Ripe citrus, stone fruit and a hint of tropical nuance are framed by lively acidity and a fine, chalky-mineral spine. Notes of lemon cream, fresh herbs, and a touch of toasted spice linger on the long, graceful finish. Already very enjoyable, the 2020 has the structure and balance to age well for 8–12 years, gaining more complexity, honeyed tones and nuttiness while retaining its core of freshness.
Production
The Blanc from Château Malartic Lagravière is sourced from gravelly, well-drained soils over limestone and clay in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, a terroir renowned for producing some of Bordeaux’s finest dry whites. The blend is traditionally Sauvignon Blanc-led, complemented by Sémillon (and occasionally a touch of other permitted white varieties), which adds texture and complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested in small parcels at optimal ripeness, often with multiple passes through the vineyard to ensure precision. After careful sorting, the must is fermented at controlled temperatures, predominantly in French oak barrels (a portion new), followed by maturation on fine lees with regular bâtonnage to build texture and aromatic complexity while preserving the wine’s tension and purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Malartic Lagravière Blanc is a superb partner for refined seafood dishes such as grilled turbot, sole meunière, scallops, lobster, or oysters with a citrus mignonette. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces, goat’s cheese, and herb-accented dishes featuring tarragon, dill, or mint. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A short decant of 15–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little ahead of time, can help the wine unfurl its more subtle layers.
Producer
Château Malartic Lagravière, located in Pessac-Léognan, is one of the few Bordeaux estates classified for both its red and white wines under the Graves Classification of 1953/59. The property’s history stretches back to the 18th century, taking its name from Count Hippolyte de Malartic, an admiral in the French navy. Under modern ownership, the château has undergone significant investment in vineyards and cellar technology, cementing its reputation as a leading producer of elegant, terroir-driven wines. Its white wine, in particular, is celebrated as one of the reference points for Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blends, consistently earning critical acclaim and standing shoulder to shoulder with the region’s most prestigious dry whites.
