Description
Lynch Bages Blanc 2021 is the vibrant white counterpart to the legendary red Grand Vin of Château Lynch-Bages, showcasing a refined, modern expression of Bordeaux Blanc. With a greater focus on Sauvignon Blanc and a reduced share of Muscadelle, this vintage is all about energy, brightness, and precision. Born in the heart of Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, it offers a rare white wine from one of the Médoc’s most iconic estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lynch Bages Blanc 2021 shines a pale straw to light lemon-yellow, with silvery-green reflections that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose is lifted and expressive, driven by Sauvignon Blanc: think citrus zest, grapefruit, lime leaf and crunchy green apple, layered with white flowers, subtle stone fruits and a delicate herbal edge. Underneath, Sémillon adds a quiet depth with hints of ripe pear, beeswax and gentle floral tones, while a touch of oak brings finesse rather than weight.
On the palate, this is crisp, tensile and beautifully focused, with a spine of racy acidity that carries flavours of lemon, pink grapefruit, white peach and fresh nectarine. There’s a fine, chalky-mineral undertone that gives structure and length, along with a discreet creaminess from partial barrel aging that rounds the mid-palate without sacrificing tension. The finish is long, saline and mouthwatering, leaving an impression of purity and precision. While already delicious in its youth, the 2021 has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining additional complexity, creaminess and honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Blanc de Lynch-Bages is produced from vineyards planted on the gravelly, limestone-influenced soils surrounding Pauillac, a terroir better known for Cabernet Sauvignon but surprisingly well-suited to structured, mineral-driven whites. The blend in 2021 is anchored by Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by Sémillon and just a small proportion of Muscadelle, reflecting the estate’s shift toward a fresher, more linear style. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve aromatic intensity and natural acidity. Gentle pressing and meticulous settling of the must precede fermentation, which takes place partly in temperature-controlled stainless steel and partly in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new), with some lees stirring to add texture and complexity. The result is a wine that marries clarity and tension with subtle creaminess and depth.
Food & Serving
Lynch Bages Blanc 2021 is an elegant, food-friendly white that pairs beautifully with refined seafood and delicate dishes. Think oysters, scallop carpaccio, grilled langoustines, sushi and sashimi, or simply prepared white fish with citrus and herbs. It also works wonderfully with goat’s cheese, fresh cheeses, asparagus, spring vegetables, and light poultry dishes such as roast chicken with tarragon or lemon. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its vibrancy and aromatic lift. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help open up the bouquet and allow the texture to soften slightly, especially as it gains a few years of bottle age.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages is one of the best-known and most respected estates in Pauillac, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification but often performing at a level well above its formal rank. Located on the gravelly plateau of Bages, overlooking the Gironde estuary, the estate has been owned and shaped by the Cazes family since the mid-20th century. Under their stewardship, Lynch-Bages has become a benchmark for powerful yet polished Médoc reds, and the introduction of Blanc de Lynch-Bages in the 1990s added a distinctive white facet to the portfolio. Today, the estate is recognized not only for its consistent quality and investment in cutting-edge winemaking, but also for helping to reassert Pauillac’s reputation for ageworthy, characterful wines—both red and white—on the global stage.
