Lynch Bages 2020 is a powerful yet beautifully polished Pauillac that marks the inaugural vintage from the estate’s new, state-of-the-art winery. This is a classic, Cabernet-driven Bordeaux with striking purity of fruit and a seamless structure that promises long life in the cellar. The blend – 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot – includes a touch more Merlot than usual, reflecting the particular conditions of the 2020 harvest rather than any stylistic shift.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lynch Bages 2020 shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose opens with rich aromas of crème de cassis and ripe blackberry, layered with notes of pencil shavings, subtle spice, graphite, and a delicate touch of fine new oak. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with impressive depth of dark fruit wrapped in ripe, powdery tannins. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum and blackberry are intertwined with cedar, tobacco, and a hint of dark chocolate and clove. The structure is firm but already remarkably integrated for such a young Lynch Bages, with fresh acidity lending precision and lift. This wine has significant aging potential: it will reward patience over 10–20+ years, gradually revealing more complexity, savoury nuance, and classic Pauillac cigar-box character.

Production
Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pauillac in the Haut-Médoc, Lynch Bages 2020 benefits from a terroir renowned for producing structured, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 vintage was carefully managed in the vineyard, with meticulous plot selection and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to capture both concentration and balance. In the new, cutting-edge winery, the grapes from each parcel are vinified separately, allowing precise control over extraction and texture. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a proportion new), where the components marry and the tannins are refined, resulting in a wine that is both powerful and exceptionally harmonious.

Food & Serving
Lynch Bages 2020 is a natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also shines alongside classic French fare like duck confit, cassoulet, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; in maturity, a shorter decant of around one hour will be sufficient to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
