Description

Lynch-Bages 2019 in magnum (1.5 L) captures everything collectors love about top Pauillac: power, polish and age‑worthy structure. This is a particularly successful vintage for the estate, offering intense blackcurrant and blackberry fruit layered with notes of licorice, mint, cigar paper and earthy clay. As the final vintage vinified in the historic Lynch-Bages winery before the new cellar was inaugurated, it stands as a benchmark bottling that will be fascinating to compare with future releases.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Lynch-Bages shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose unfolds in layers: classic cassis and ripe blackberries are intertwined with sweet blackcurrant liqueur, licorice, fresh mint, cigar wrapper, graphite and a touch of warm earth and clay. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich and tightly knit, with a sense of depth and multi-dimensionality. Juicy dark fruit is framed by ripe, powdery tannins and a lively, balancing acidity that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. Flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are complemented by hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf, cedar and subtle spice. The magnum format further enhances its aging potential; well-stored, this 2019 should evolve gracefully for 20–30 years, gaining complexity, finesse and a more velvety texture over time.

Production
Lynch-Bages is based in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where its vineyards sit on classic deep gravel over limestone and sand—perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve ripeness while retaining structure. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested parcel by parcel at optimum maturity, mostly by hand. In 2019, fruit from the various gravelly plots was carefully sorted, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to capture both color and fine tannins. The grand vin was subsequently aged in French oak barriques, a significant portion new, allowing the wine’s powerful structure and layered fruit to integrate with subtle oak spice while preserving the clarity of the Pauillac terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a classic, structured Bordeaux red that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think roast or grilled lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, braised short ribs, duck breast or game birds, as well as truffle risotto, mushroom ragout and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if opened young, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics, while older bottles will benefit from a more gentle, shorter decanting just to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Lynch-Bages is one of Pauillac’s most beloved estates, officially classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification but widely regarded as outperforming its rank. Located on the Bages plateau just outside the town of Pauillac, the château has built a reputation for producing muscular yet polished wines that age beautifully, often described as benchmarks for modern, cellar‑worthy Médoc. Under the long-term stewardship of the Cazes family, Lynch-Bages has invested heavily in vineyard management and winemaking, culminating in the construction of a new, state-of-the-art winery completed after the 2019 vintage. Frequently praised by international critics and highly sought after by collectors, Lynch-Bages stands today as one of the key reference points for Left Bank Bordeaux.
