Description

Lynch Bages 2016 is a powerful, impeccably structured red Bordeaux that captures everything collectors love about this historic Pauillac estate. Deeply colored, densely fruited and beautifully polished, it’s a wine that marries classic Médoc character with modern precision. The 2016 vintage is already being hailed as one of the château’s greats, with the potential to become truly legendary in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lynch Bages 2016 shows a deep garnet-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant (cassis), chocolate-covered cherries and ripe mulberries, layered with notes of menthol, wild herbs (garrigue), tilled earth and a subtle tapenade-like savoriness. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and wonderfully dense, with a core of dark, concentrated fruit framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins. Flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry are interwoven with black pepper, cinnamon, clove and a touch of graphite and cocoa. The structure is powerful yet refined, with vibrant acidity keeping everything in balance and a long, spice-laden finish. This 2016 has serious aging potential: it can be approached with a long decant now, but will reward patience over 15–30+ years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and silkier texture with time.

Production
Château Lynch Bages lies on the gravelly plateau of Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep layers of gravel over limestone and clay provide superb drainage and stress the vines just enough to produce small, intensely flavored berries. The blend is typically Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. Grapes are carefully sorted and traditionally vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with a long maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) to polish the structure and weave in subtle spice, without overshadowing the purity and power of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Lynch Bages 2016 is an outstanding partner for rich, deeply flavored dishes such as roast or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with classic French fare like duck confit, entrecôte Bordelaise, or mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. If drinking in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the complex bouquet to unfold; in maturity, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is usually sufficient to remove sediment and let the wine open gracefully.

Producer
Château Lynch Bages is one of the most revered estates in Pauillac, classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification but long regarded as punching far above its official rank. Located on the Bages plateau, the estate has roots dating back to the 18th century and owes its name to the Lynch family of Irish origin. Under the stewardship of the Cazes family since the mid-20th century, Lynch Bages has earned a reputation for producing consistently powerful, age-worthy wines that have become favorites among collectors and sommeliers worldwide. Known for its generous style, reliability across vintages and strong identity within Pauillac, Lynch Bages is widely considered one of Bordeaux’s “super seconds” in all but name.
