Description

Lungarotti Sagrantino 2019 is a powerful red wine from Umbria, crafted from the region’s signature Sagrantino grape. This is a wine for those who appreciate depth, structure and age‑worthy Italian reds with real character. It brings together Lungarotti’s pioneering spirit in Umbria with a modern, sustainable approach to fine winemaking. Known for producing some of Italy’s most compelling wines, Lungarotti showcases Sagrantino here in a pure, focused style: intensely colored, firmly structured and richly aromatic. The estate was instrumental in putting Umbria on the wine map from the 1960s onwards, and this Sagrantino is a natural extension of that legacy—an expression of a historic grape revived and refined by one of the region’s leading family estates.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lungarotti Sagrantino 2019 typically shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet hue with almost inky concentration at the core and a vibrant rim, signaling its youth and intensity. The nose is expressive and layered: expect dark cherries, blackberries and plums intertwined with notes of violets, bitter cocoa, licorice, sweet spice, tobacco leaf and a hint of leather and underbrush as it opens. On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, firmly structured wine with the hallmark tannins that make Sagrantino so distinctive. Dense dark fruit—black cherry, blackcurrant and damson—meets savory nuances of dried herbs, graphite and spice, supported by fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. The tannins are abundant yet refined, suggesting a wine built for the long haul rather than immediate softness. With proper cellaring, it will gain complexity, integrating its structure and developing more tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers and cedar over time. Well stored, the 2019 vintage has excellent aging potential, comfortably evolving over 10–15 years and potentially longer.

Production
Lungarotti’s Sagrantino comes from vineyards in Umbria, where rolling hills, clay‑limestone soils and a continental‑Mediterranean climate give Sagrantino its natural power and aromatic intensity. Warm days and cooler nights help retain acidity and develop thick‑skinned, deeply colored grapes—ideal conditions for this robust variety. Grapes are typically hand‑harvested to ensure only the healthiest bunches make it to the winery, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, fermentation takes place with controlled temperatures to preserve aromatics and manage Sagrantino’s naturally high tannins, often with extended maceration to extract color and structure in a controlled way. The wine is then aged in oak (often a mix of large casks and/or barriques) to polish the tannins, add subtle spice and complexity, and finally refined in bottle before release, ensuring harmony between fruit, oak and structure.

Food & Serving
Lungarotti Sagrantino 2019 calls for rich, flavorful dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. It pairs beautifully with slow‑braised meats such as lamb shank, ossobuco, beef short ribs or wild boar ragù, as well as roast game, aged Pecorino, mature Parmigiano‑Reggiano and hearty mushroom or truffle‑based dishes. Umbrian specialties—like lentils with sausage, grilled meats and rustic stews—are natural companions. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and texture. Decanting is strongly recommended: give younger bottles at least 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and let the bouquet unfold fully.

Producer
Lungarotti is one of Umbria’s benchmark family‑owned estates and a key name in modern Italian wine. Founded by Giorgio Lungarotti, the winery began its ascent in the 1960s, when he helped transform Torgiano and Umbria from relative obscurity into a respected wine region. His creation Rubesco—and especially its Riserva—has been consistently ranked among Italy’s top wines and regularly garners top scores in the influential Gambero Rosso guide. Today, Giorgio’s daughters Chiara and Teresa lead the estate, combining tradition with innovation and a strong commitment to sustainability, covering a large portion of their energy needs through the reuse of plant material from the vineyards, with a goal of reaching full self‑sufficiency. Beyond wine, Lungarotti has helped shape the cultural identity of the region through wine and olive oil museums and a five‑star hotel in Torgiano, making the estate both a reference for quality and a destination for wine lovers worldwide.
