Description

Lungarotti Rosso Montefalco 2015 is a characterful Umbrian red that marries the supple charm of Merlot with the power and structure of Sagrantino. Crafted by one of Italy’s most respected family-owned estates, it captures the dark-fruited depth and savoury warmth that has made Montefalco a rising star among Italian regions. This vintage comes from a house that helped place Umbria firmly on the world wine map, blending tradition with a modern, quality‑driven mindset.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lungarotti Rosso Montefalco 2015 shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting both its concentration and a graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is inviting and complex, with ripe black cherry, blackberry and plum layered over notes of dried herbs, sweet spices, leather and a hint of tobacco and cocoa. On the palate, the Merlot lends plush, dark-fruited juiciness, while Sagrantino contributes firm tannic structure, earthy depth and a lingering, slightly balsamic finish. Expect flavours of black cherry, wild berries and blackcurrant framed by notes of licorice, cedar, dried flowers and subtle vanilla from barrel aging. The 2015 vintage offers a harmonious balance between richness and freshness, with vibrant acidity keeping the wine lively. While drinking beautifully now, especially after a short decant, it has the structure to continue developing tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried fruit over the next 5–8 years, depending on storage.

Production
The grapes for Lungarotti Rosso Montefalco 2015 are sourced from hillside vineyards around Montefalco in Umbria, an area known for its clay- and limestone-rich soils, good drainage and marked day–night temperature swings that favour slow, even ripening. The vines are sustainably farmed, in keeping with Lungarotti’s strong environmental focus, and the harvest is typically carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness to preserve both aromatic intensity and natural acidity. In the cellar, Merlot and Sagrantino are vinified with temperature-controlled fermentations to extract colour and flavour gently, followed by extended maceration to tame Sagrantino’s naturally robust tannins. The wine is then matured in a combination of oak (often larger casks and/or barriques) and bottle to integrate the components, polish the tannins and build the layered, savoury complexity that defines this Montefalco red.

Food & Serving
This Rosso Montefalco is a natural partner for hearty, flavourful dishes. It shines with slow-braised meats such as ossobuco, lamb shanks or beef short ribs, as well as game stews, grilled sausages and rich ragù over pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected cuisine that echoes Umbria’s gastronomic heritage. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to soften the Sagrantino tannins, open up the bouquet and allow the wine’s dark fruit and savoury tones to fully express themselves.

Producer
Founded by Giorgio Lungarotti, the Lungarotti estate is widely credited with elevating Umbria from a little-known region to a serious player on the Italian wine scene, particularly from the 1960s onward. From their base in Torgiano, the family created benchmark wines like Rubesco and its Riserva, which has consistently earned top ratings and has been counted among Italy’s finest wines, frequently celebrated in the influential Gambero Rosso guide. Today, Giorgio’s daughters, Chiara and Teresa, lead the estate with a strong commitment to sustainability—covering a major share of their energy needs by reusing biomass from the vineyards—and to cultural heritage, as seen in their wine and olive oil museums and five-star hospitality in Torgiano. Lungarotti remains a reference point in Umbria, uniting regional tradition, environmental responsibility and polished, terroir‑driven wines that have helped define the identity of central Italian reds.
