Description

Lungarotti Brut 2017 is a refined traditional-method sparkling wine from the heart of Umbria, crafted entirely from Pinot Grigio. This is not your everyday Italian bubbly, but a thoughtfully made cuvée that combines the freshness of Pinot Grigio with the elegance and structure of extended lees aging. It offers a distinctive Umbrian take on sparkling wine, marrying precision, regional character, and the hallmark finesse of the Lungarotti estate. The wine’s unique selling point lies in its use of Pinot Grigio—a variety more often seen in still whites—transformed here into a complex, gastronomic sparkling wine with real depth and personality. Fine, persistent bubbles, lifted aromatics and a dry, balanced palate set it apart from more generic Prosecco-style wines. Lungarotti’s historic role in putting Umbria on the fine wine map gives this bottle a particular significance: it’s the sparkling expression of a pioneering estate that has been redefining the region since the 1960s.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lungarotti Brut 2017 typically shows a pale straw to light lemon hue, with subtle green reflections and a very fine, steady mousse. The bead is delicate and persistent, signaling careful secondary fermentation and aging on the lees. On the nose, expect inviting aromas of crisp green apple, pear, and white peach, layered with notes of citrus blossom, acacia, and a gentle brioche or biscuit nuance from time spent on the lees. There may be hints of almond, fennel, or wet stone that add complexity and a distinctly Italian, Mediterranean accent. The palate is dry (Brut) and precise, with a lively, refreshing acidity that carries flavors of orchard fruit, lemon zest, and a touch of white flowers. The mousse is creamy yet energetic, giving the wine a graceful texture without heaviness. Subtle autolytic notes—fresh bread, pastry and a touch of nuttiness—enhance the mid-palate, leading to a clean, mineral-tinged finish. This vintage is best enjoyed within 3–5 years of the harvest to capture its vibrant fruit and tension, though the structure and acidity can allow it to develop a touch more complexity in bottle over the short term.

Production
Sourced from estate Pinot Grigio vineyards in Umbria, this wine reflects the region’s rolling hills, clay-limestone soils and marked diurnal temperature shifts, which help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in the cool of early morning to protect freshness and avoid oxidation. After a gentle pressing, the base wine is fermented at controlled low temperatures in stainless steel to preserve delicate primary aromas. Secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle using the traditional method, followed by extended aging on the lees to build texture, fine bubbles and subtle brioche-like complexity. A carefully judged Brut dosage is added at disgorgement to balance the crisp structure without masking the precision and terroir expression of Umbria.

Food & Serving
Lungarotti Brut 2017 is a versatile sparkling wine that shines both as an aperitif and at the table. Pair it with oysters, shrimp cocktail, crudo, or simply prepared white fish to highlight its saline, citrusy edge. It works beautifully with lightly fried seafood, tempura vegetables, sushi, and delicate antipasti such as prosciutto e melone, burrata, or fresh goat cheese. It can also complement creamy risotti, particularly those with shellfish, lemon, or spring vegetables. Serve well-chilled at around 6–8°C (43–46°F). A short, 10–15 minute rest in the glass or in an open bottle is usually sufficient; full decanting is not necessary, but pouring into proper tulip-shaped sparkling flutes or white wine glasses will allow the aromas to fully unfold.

Producer
Lungarotti is one of Italy’s benchmark family-owned estates, widely credited with elevating Umbria from a quiet, rural region to a respected name in fine wine. Founded by Giorgio Lungarotti in the 1960s, the winery gained international recognition with Rubesco and its Riserva, wines that consistently earn top marks in leading Italian guides such as Gambero Rosso. Today, Giorgio’s daughters, Chiara and Teresa, lead the estate, continuing the family’s pioneering spirit with a strong focus on sustainability—covering the majority of their energy needs through reuse of vineyard and winery by-products, with a goal of full self-sufficiency. Beyond wine, Lungarotti has become a cultural hub in Torgiano, known for its wine and olive oil museums and a five-star hotel, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of Umbrian wine culture and hospitality.
