L'Oratoire des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2023

L’Oratoire des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2023 is a refined Rhône red that captures the character of one of France’s most historic appellations. A classic blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, it combines generous dark-fruit expression with mineral freshness, silky tannins and a lingering spicy finish. Its origins are closely linked to the Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes vineyard, named in 1926 after an 18th-century oratory dedicated to Saint Mark.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the 2023 vintage opens with expressive aromas of blackberry and raspberry, complemented by hints of chocolate and aromatic Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it begins with lively freshness before revealing a pronounced mineral character, rounded by supple, silky tannins. The finish is long and spicy, with the concentration and structure to develop further in bottle while remaining approachable with careful decanting.

Production
The wine comes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards characterised by terraces of silica-rich stones mixed with red clay, alongside limestone-influenced areas. The grapes are cultivated according to strict organic methods and carefully destemmed before approximately 20 days of maceration. Gentle pumping-over and pressing of the skins help build colour and a refined tannic structure, after which the wine matures for 12 months in oak barrels and vats to harmonise its power, freshness and concentration.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or braised beef, roast lamb and game, this full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape also suits richly flavoured dishes with herbs, mushrooms or peppery sauces. Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C, and decant for approximately one hour to allow the fruit, mineral character and spice to fully emerge.

Producer
Founded in 1880, L’Oratoire des Papes takes its name from a small 18th-century oratory dedicated to Saint Mark. The estate’s historic vineyard has been known as Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes since 1926 and is now managed by Ogier, one of the Rhône Valley’s respected names. Since 2008, the vineyards have been cultivated using strict organic practices, while the expertise of winemaker Didier Couturier has helped preserve the site’s identity; the wine has also received a 90-point rating from Vinous.
