Description

Lopez de Heredia’s Viña Tondonia Reserva 2009 in magnum format is a benchmark traditional Rioja, crafted for those who appreciate nuance, longevity and true old-world character. Drawn from the famed Tondonia vineyard on the banks of the Ebro, this Reserva marries power and finesse in a way that only this historic bodega seems to master. The 2009 vintage, a warm and generous year, delivers depth and concentration while remaining unmistakably elegant and classically styled.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange highlights at the rim, already hinting at its slow, graceful evolution. The nose opens with roasted and savory notes from long aging in old American oak—think toasted coconut, cedar shavings and cigar box—wrapped around ripe black fruit, dried cherries, plum and a subtle wild herb complexity. On the palate, this is structured yet remarkably refined, with the hallmark Lopez de Heredia interplay of mature fruit and savory, tertiary nuance. Flavors of blackcurrant, stewed red berries, dried fig and orange peel are layered with leather, tobacco leaf, sweet spice and a touch of balsamic. The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine both grip and elegance, while the acidity keeps everything fresh and precise. In magnum, the 2009 has excellent aging potential: it is already beautifully drinkable but will continue to develop added complexity and silkiness over the next 10–20 years, depending on cellaring conditions.

Production
The Viña Tondonia vineyard sits on a prime meander of the Ebro River near Haro in Rioja Alta, with poor, stony, limestone-rich soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The 2009 Reserva is a classic house blend of approximately 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in Lopez de Heredia’s iconic, century-old wooden vats, followed by an exceptionally long aging of around six years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with regular rackings to clarify the wine gently. It is then bottled unhurriedly and allowed to rest further in the cellars before release, especially in magnum, ensuring harmony and full integration of its components.

Food & Serving
This is a deeply gastronomic Rioja Reserva that shines with slow-cooked and richly flavored dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary, braised beef cheeks, suckling pig, game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté; its savory, mature profile also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle, and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the complexity without muting the aromatics. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in magnum, to help the wine unfurl its layers of fruit, spice and tertiary notes, and to soften the structure for peak enjoyment.

Producer
Lopez de Heredia, founded in 1877 in Haro, is one of Rioja’s most revered and traditional bodegas, widely regarded as a guardian of classic winemaking in the region. Still family-owned and operated, the estate is known for its unwavering commitment to long aging, old vines and time-honored cellar practices that many modern wineries have abandoned. The Viña Tondonia vineyard, its flagship site, has become synonymous with ageworthy, terroir-driven Rioja that resists fleeting trends. Over the decades, Lopez de Heredia’s wines have earned a cult following among sommeliers and collectors alike, standing as reference points for how great Rioja can gracefully evolve over decades while retaining incredible freshness and personality.
