Description

Lo Zoccolaio Barolo Ravera Riserva 2017 is a classic, traditionally crafted Barolo that captures the depth, elegance and structure that have made Piemonte one of the world’s great red wine regions. Sourced from select Nebbiolo vineyards in Barolo and Monforte d’Alba, this Riserva bottling showcases the pedigree of the famed Ravera cru in a finely tuned, ageworthy expression. It’s a wine for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate purity of fruit, meticulous vineyard work and a firmly traditional style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo Ravera Riserva shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinted edges, typical of well-crafted Nebbiolo. The nose is highly aromatic and layered, with notes of dried roses, violet, sour cherry and wild strawberry intertwined with hints of tar, sweet tobacco, leather, licorice and subtle spice. On the palate, this Barolo is structured yet refined, with firm, fine-grained tannins wrapped around flavors of red cherry, pomegranate, dried cranberry and blood orange. Earthy undertones of truffle, dried herbs and forest floor add complexity, while well-integrated acidity keeps the wine vibrant and long on the finish. As a Riserva, it is built for longevity: already compelling now with proper aeration, it has the potential to develop greater tertiary complexity—leather, porcini, dried fruit and spice—over the next decade and beyond, under good cellar conditions.

Production
Cascina Lo Zoccolaio works according to rigorously traditional methods, with a deep respect for the land. The Nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo Ravera Riserva come from vineyards located exclusively in the prestigious communes of Barolo and Monforte d’Alba, on calcareous clay and marl soils that lend both structure and finesse. The vineyards are farmed without herbicides; instead, controlled grassing and green manuring between the rows maintain soil health and biodiversity, in step with nature’s rhythms. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with strict selection of only the best, lower-yielding bunches to ensure concentration and quality. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in a traditional style, allowing an extended maceration on the skins and a long maturation in wood and bottle before release to earn the Riserva designation and fully express the character of Nebbiolo and the Ravera terroir.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, game birds, lamb shank, and dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours before serving in its youth, and 30–60 minutes for more evolved bottles—to allow the aromatics and tannins to unfold gracefully.
