Description
Since its debut in 1981, Livio Felluga Terre Alte has stood as one of Italy’s most acclaimed white wines and a benchmark for Friuli’s potential. The 2022 vintage continues this legacy with a refined blend of Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc from the historic Terre Alte vineyards in Rosazzo. Elegant yet generously textured, it combines layered fruit and floral complexity with the structure to evolve beautifully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terre Alte 2022 shows a luminous straw yellow hue with golden highlights, hinting at both richness and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe pear, yellow plum and white peach weave together with notes of acacia blossom, wild herbs, citrus zest and delicate hints of almond and vanilla spice, supported by subtle flinty minerality.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a silky, almost creamy texture lifted by precise acidity. Friulano brings depth and gentle almond and herbal tones, Pinot Bianco adds finesse and mid-palate weight, while Sauvignon Blanc contributes aromatic lift and tension. Flavors of stone fruit, citrus, white flowers and lightly toasted nuts unfold in layers, leading to a long, savory finish with a saline-mineral edge. Still youthful, the 2022 is already impressive but has the structure and concentration to develop tertiary notes of honey, dried fruit, spice and even more complexity over 10–15 years in a good cellar.
Production
Terre Alte is sourced from hillside vineyards in Rosazzo, one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s most esteemed crus, where vines grow on the region’s signature 'ponca' soils—layered marl and sandstone that lend both minerality and tension to the wine. The slopes benefit from a unique climate influenced by both the Adriatic Sea and the Prealps, with warm days and cool nights preserving aromatics and acidity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, the varieties are typically vinified separately: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and an extended period on the fine lees build texture and complexity. A portion of the wine matures in oak, lending subtle spice and structure, while the rest remains in stainless steel to preserve freshness before the final blend is assembled and allowed to harmonize before release.
Food & Serving
Terre Alte 2022 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines alongside refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, lobster, monkfish, or turbot, as well as risotti—especially with seafood, spring vegetables or porcini mushrooms. It is also superb with roasted poultry, veal scaloppine, creamy poultry sauces, rabbit, and delicately flavored white meats, as well as aged cheeses and dishes with truffle or aromatic herbs. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. For this young vintage, a brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, particularly if served with more elaborate dishes.
Producer
Livio Felluga is one of the great pioneers of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and a key figure in elevating Italian white wine on the world stage. After settling in the rolling Colli Orientali hills, Livio invested tirelessly in high-density hillside vineyards and quality-focused viticulture at a time when the region was still largely unknown internationally. Today, the estate is regarded as a benchmark producer, renowned for its terroir-driven, ageworthy whites and its iconic map label. Terre Alte, first produced in 1981, quickly became the flagship cuvée and has since been recognized as one of Italy’s most important white wines, helping to cement Rosazzo’s reputation as a premier site and inspiring a new generation of Friulian winemakers.
